News: BTB: Cowboys 2018 offseason priorities by position group: Wide receiver

This is quite possibly the moist talked about group on the Dallas Cowboys.

The next in a series of posts looking at each position group on the Dallas Cowboys roster, and determining just how much of a priority it will be this offseason. (The links to the rest of the series at the bottom)

    Position Group - Wide receiver

What a difference a year makes. In 2016, with the Cowboys offense humming, the Dallas receiver group looked solid, with only minor complaints here and there. After 2017, perhaps no group is under more scrutiny by observers of the Cowboys. Is it time for a major overhaul, or will a few slight tweaks solve the problem? That is the decision facing the organization, but if you’ve followed the Cowboys under Jason Garrett, you probably know that a complete overhaul isn’t likely. Still, some changes will need to be made.

    The Roster

Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams, Cole Beasley, Ryan Switzer, Brice Butler, Noah Brown, Lance Lenoir, Brian Brown, KD Cannon

    The Breakdown

Dez Bryant - Bryant’s 2017 season was so frustrating that there has been open talk from fans and media about dumping him and his high salary. ***SNIP***

Offseason Priority - High . The Cowboys desperately need to re-work how this group operates. They may add only one new, significant player to the group, but that, along with re-thinking the offensive scheme, could produce big changes. There is a thought that the Cowboys need someone with speed who can challenge defenses vertically. Physically Bryant can’t, and Williams has not shown that ability. It’s also not Beasley’s or Switzer’s game. Butler was the one guy who seemed to be able to do it, but his inconsistency with his hands and the Cowboys lack of faith in him meant he didn’t play much. Maybe the Cowboys look for a burner to open things up and take some of Williams’ (or Bryant’s) snaps.

Dez: I'd demand a cut in pay. If he says no then cut him. He can be replaced in FA with a possession receiver
Butler: One year prove it
Switzer: I'd let him go unless he proves more. He's not better than Bees and he's not that great on STs.
FA: Speed and quicks
Draft: SAA
Brown: proves it in camp or waive him. He's a possession receiver who can block. I like that but not as much as catching balls and good + yard production.
Williams: Keep him as the #2-3

TE: Not getting into them here but none are more than possession receivers who can inline block.

Good topic!
No one mention ( that I know ) but IMO this unit is in for major changes. Changes I think will have them moving on from at least one starter, maybe two. Just like they did in the secondary last year, I see something similar but not quite on the same level. The question is which ones are most vulnerable and I'm not counting Butler since he was 4th or 5th on depth chart.

Dez .......safe
Switzer.....safe
Beasley........he's a free agent next year but he was also Dak's 2016 security blanket AND go-to receiver.
TWill........ only $3.5M guaranteed money left ( paid 2018 ) on his 2017 extension deal
Brown.......safe

I can see them drafting a more Dak friendly WR within first 2 picks making TWill or Beasley changes of getting traded or cut real possiblity IMO.

Agree on every single point. Draft a stud #1 WR and let's go make some noise downfield. Even the most uncreative offense can be overshadowed by immense talent. Look at what Zeke does to that basic offense. He elevates it on talent alone.

Cut or be cut. If you take a pay cut you're in competition to keep your job.

Williams
You're in open competition to keep your job.

Incorporate Switzer into your 4 receiver sets at the very least.
If there's a guy there with speed that you want take him in the first round even if you got to move up a couple spots we got extra pics to burn.

I have no problem letting Butler compete for one of the top two spots if he doesn't get them trade him.
