Slingbox allows you to watch your home TV remotely over the internet.

What if:
I lived in Wisconsin.
Rented a room from someone in Dallas.
Installed a Slingbox in the rented room.
Watched Cowboys games using the Slingbox.

Would that be legal if:

Option 1:
Slingbox connected using antenna reception.

Option 2:
Slingbox connected using a DirecTV or Cable account at the Dallas address with the account in my name.

Option 3:
Slingbox connected using a DirecTV or Cable account at the Dallas address with the account in the homeowners name.

I've got an easier option for you. It only requires $99 per year.
If you are interested in more details PM me and I'll share.

Sounds expensive is what is sounds like. But legal, yes. Unless you’re actually “renting a room”...;)

The government won't know or care unless you start distributing it past yourself. The slingbox company might notice your behavior, and they may have terms and conditions that prohibit it, but they won't go past suspending your use of services after such a minor infraction.

I posted my opinion on the legality but you're right, overall this is just a terribly expensive idea

If you have friends/relatives in the area then the rent would be $1 per year.

My real idea was that people could trade "rented rooms". If I lived in Wisconsin and a Packers fan lived in Dallas we could just trade.

There is no monthly fee on Slingbox.

It can be done without Slingbox just using a video capture card in a computer. I just used Slingbox to simplify the question.

If done with antenna (OTA) reception the cost would be the $1 per year rent from friends/family. It just wouldn't work for ESPN games but those are shown nationwide anyway.

My question is what if the NFL did know about it?

If there really is a rented room then that should be the same as if I owned a 2nd residence. It certainly should be legal if I set it up in my own 2nd residence.

It seems to me that the government would have to make the entire Slingbox concept illegal in order to make my concept illegal.

The free streaming sites are yuck from what I've seen. I don't think you can pause/rewind and I don't know if it's full 1080p resolution.

My OP was an example. I actually live in Dallas but my girlfriend is a Packers fan. I buy the Sunday Ticket for her every year. She has relatives in Wisconsin.

You would be accepting compensation in exchange for distributing a copyrighted live production without consent.

Your friend in Wisconsin probably wouldn't get in trouble. You sure would, especially after posting prior intent on a public forum.

Edit: if you got caught...

Living in Tampa, I get to see a good amount of Cowboys football believe it or not. With them normally being the game of the week and with the Monday nights and Sunday night games, that’s a good portion of the season.

It would be so nice if I were allowed to order and receive Dallas local channels while living here in Balt. so I could watch the football games and get their sports coverage. But, the networks who broadcast the games won't allow that. If they did, half the US football fans would be getting Dallas local channels just to watch the Cowboys. Dallas local channels would make a ton of money on advertising.

vipbox was awesome last year along with first row sports. Didn't miss a game.
