Stephen Jones said the Cowboys did not trade down for the purpose of adding picks. Rather, they had players they liked taken just before their picks, and that is why they traded down.

For pick 136, the Falcons traded up with Oakland to get pick 135 ahead of the Cowboys, and selected DE John Cominsky. Then the Cowboys traded out of pick 136 to get picks 149 and pick 213.

When the 49ers jumped in at pick 148 in a trade with Denver to draft LB Dre Greenlaw, the Cowboys moved back again to pick to pick 158, and got pick 218 from the Raiders.

So the reason the Cowboys traded back was because the Falcons and 49ers jumped ahead to them to take the players they wanted at the their draft position.

The same thing happened in the 3rd. Someone jumped up and grabbed Will Harris so we took the guard we had not even spoken with. He does look like good value though.

It appears that other teams knew exactly which players we were after.

Under that circumstance, it's far better to trade down for extra picks than "settle" on a player.

Pretty smart thinking in the War Room.

I mean why do other teams know what players we want? It's like the Rams game all over again.

We all knew which players they wanted. It would be easy for other teams to figure it out as well.

By the time the draft arrived it was pretty clear that Trysten hill and Juan Thornhill were the targets in the 2nd. In the 3rd it was Will Harris and Damien Harris. In the 4th it was Pollard, Isaiah Johnson and Cominsky.

After trading back it was obvious we were going to take Dre Greenlaw.
