In that order. A bad kicker will lose you a playoff game. Maher is a bad kicker. Backup QB is harder to fill. Dak’s health and toughness has lulled these guys into a false sense of calm. Unpredictable injuries happen. Garrett will absolutely be lost without Dak. It really is a 6-7 win difference.

It's funny to see how that pendulum has swung. From overpaying over-the-hill stiffs like Brad Johnson who couldn't play anymore, to rolling the dice with two young guys who can't play now. Years ago, the team had no reservations whatsoever about cost and had to have that veteran backup, and now, 'eh, who cares?'

FRISCO, Texas – It’s safe to say we’ll be paying attention to the kickers this summer.

For so many years the position was a foregone conclusion. Yes, the Cowboys would always bring in a kicker to help spell Dan Bailey, but that precious roster spot was always a lock.

Until it wasn’t.

We know how that story played out. Brett Maher had a sensational preseason, prompting the Cowboys’ stunning decision to release Bailey last summer. And Maher justified the decision, nailing 16 consecutive kicks during the first half of the season.

The back stretch saw highs and lows. Maher had some amazing moments, hitting multiple game winners, not to mention long kicks from as far as 62 yards out. He also struggled from close ranger, with multiple misses from inside 40 yards and a missed extra point.

Which begs the question, which Brett Maher are the Cowboys getting in 2019?

Phillips, Draper, Broaddus and Helman are slightly concerned but nearly not as much as they should be.

The Cowboys are really unnecessarily comfortable with Maher. A quality FG kicker is always important when your head coach plays for FGs more than for touchdowns half the time.

I certainly hope they are at least planning on what to do if he gets off to a shaky camp and preseason.

They should have brought in a UDFA and it is incredible they would not even consider Matt Bryant.
Bring in competition and may the best man win. If that is Maher he can contribute to our SB run!

It is also a by product of the state of the position.

Maybe it is me, but it seemed that 5-6 years ago, there were always a few older veterans around like Kitna etc. that could be somewhat dependable.

Now? You have a pretty scary veteran QB crop to choose from each year. Trash like Mike Glennon, Blaine Gabbert, Matt Schaub, Tom Savage and Matt Barkley?

No thanks. Take a look around the league. There are maybe two backup QBs that you can say can actually play, like Bridgewater or Brissett.

Most teams are just taking their chances on younger guys and/or trying to draft one every year to work with.

I also think the Weeden/Cassel thing broke the Cowboys of the habit. They paid out decent money and they could have got the same garbage results with a cheaper kid.

I think there are several around the league better than either of the two guys currently on our roster. I'd take Colt McCoy, Keenum, or Kevin Hogan over ours.

It appears the Cowboys managed to find the wrong thing to do no matter what they try. When they go the veteran backup route, they're mistakes like Johnson/Weeden/Cassel. And when they try to go younger, we guys like Dustin Vaughan and the two we currently employ.

I'd keep an eye out for castoffs from other teams currently employing too many. Washington's situation intrigues me as to whether or not they keep both veterans and Denver currently has four quarterbacks and the 49'ers three.

I am not thrilled with Rush or White, but of these three, Keenum isn't going to be available, McCoy is injured and overrated and Hogan just--well--is.

As mentioned I would love to have a vet but in all fairness to Mike White he is entering his 2nd season and camp. I would like to see how much if any he has progressed. I don't think many fans thought Romo was more than camp fodder coming in as a rookie UDFA. I don't know what White can or can't do but hopefully we will see pretty soon

I think the staff gives White a better look this preseason. If he can unseat Rush I will feel better about our backup.

I consider all of them - and many others - to be better than Rush or White. One is throwing four picks in a single day and the other can't handle a huddle.

And I think that one of Washington's vets will ultimately be made available, especially considering what they're still on the hook for Alex Smith's contract.

Hoping the FO knows something we don’t. Maybe White has made a big jump over the offseason.

Not from anything I've heard or read. Last bit of news I heard was Garrett cursing him out because he failed to handle his duties in the huddle. It doesn't get much more basic than that.

I might be in the minority but Maher is a darn good kicker

It’s really difficult to come behind a historically accurate kicker and not be judged harshly
