I want to know where you put the Dallas LOS compared to recent Cowboys teams and the current NFL. When I refer to "LOS", I mean the OL and DL talent pools collectively.

OL: Martin, Frederick, Smith, Collins, Williams, McGovern, Looney, Fleming + some others

DL: DLaw, Quinn, Hill, Collins, Crawford, Hyder, Gregory, Woods, Taco, Covington + some others

Just looking at these, the OL has 3 probable probowlers, a couple decent starters, and really sound depth. The DL has 1 probable probowler, multiple guys that could make noise, and again pretty decent depth.

Ranking against recent Dallas teams I dont remember looking this good at the LOS on paper in the 2000s. We've had some good DLs but not at the same time as a 3 pro bowler OL and vice-versa.

Ranking against current NFL teams, I think our DL is middle of the pack right now but not for long and only because of all the new bodies that havent played together or at all in the NFL. Then you factor in the OL and I think we're top 10 overall at the LOS.

It wouldnt surprise me at all if we're top 5 OL and top 10 DL by end of year, and idk how many other teams could realistically project that for themselves right now, meaning I could see Dallas being one of the best overall at LOS control in 2019.

Ok Cowboys Zone, do what you do best and explain why I'm wrong.

Top 3 OL and top 16 DL

Offensive line is self explanatory when everyone is healthy .

Defensive line has a stud in Lawrence, Quibn who should be suitable for passing downs but then question marks at DT.
How good will Hill be? Can Collins stay healthy and build off his rookie year? Crawford at DT or DE or a hybrid again? Can Woofs repeat his performance?

Our OL will be top 1 or 2 if TFred comes back like his old self. Our DL has depth and the potential to be top 10 to top 5. It's been over 20 years since we've had both trenches have the potential to be dominant.

All that said. It's still only potential until the season starts. At least we have the players with that potential. We really haven't had that on both sides of the LOS in years.

On the OL, it is the starters that make it in the upper echelon of lines in the league. Although there are very good non-starters there.

On the DL, if they are going to be a top unit, it’ll be the depth that is responsible. Inside at DT especially. If Gregory comes back (big if) there will be little drop off from the starting four to their backups (except Lawrence).

That DL rotation is going to cause some issues for offenses.

As for ranking... I would think the OL is top 5. The DL could be anywhere in the top 15 I think, depending on how Hill and others develop and mesh, and if Gregory comes back.

OLine
The 2014 Playoff lineup was the best.
  • Tyron Smith
  • Ron Leary (great game against JJ Watt)
  • Travis Frederick
  • Zack Martin
  • Jermey Parnell (better than L.Collins)

DLine
The 2019 DL is miles ahead of the 2014 DL.
  • DE Jeremy Mincey
  • DT Tyrone Crawford
  • DT Nick Hayden
  • DE George Selvie

They switched back to the 4-3 in 2013. Probably no point comparing to the years with the 3-4.

2019 Projected Lineups

OC/OG Backup Looney/McGovern

DT (4th) Covington or Crawford

They play both DTs as 3-tech in many obvious passing situations.
The second 3-tech likely plays about the same snaps as the staring 3-tech and 1-tech.

Agree. OL is focused on the starters. DL is focused on the depth.

The 3rd DE is also almost a starter unless the 4th DE is good enough to split it Right/Left between them.
They'll try to limit Quinn from getting worn down against the run like they did with Gregory last season.

The second 3-tech DT is basically a co-starter with two 3-techs and a 1-tech all playing almost the same number of snaps.

The DT rotation snaps are likely:
(200% total for 2 positions)
  • 60% Collins
  • 60% Hill
  • 60% Woods
  • 20% 4th DT

Yep.

The 4th DT (Probably Covington) won’t get a whole lot of playing time if the top 3 stay healthy. Covington is a high energy / high effort player that is better than a lot of people think. He is going to come in fresh and cause some trouble for the interior OL.

Having depth at DT is, in my opinion, a really big deal. A fresh Hill and Covington coming in will be an issue for an OL in the 4th quarter. It’s why I say that depth on the DL makes the guys better players than they normally would be. Being fresh in the 4th quarter effects all of the DL... including the starters.

You know that OL’s aren’t going to want to play Dallas because of how energetically they play, how relentlessly they’re coached to be and how fresh they are late in games.

It isn’t a sure thing because, like you said, McGovern is a really good player. However, Williams is also good and his only real weakness should be much improved this year. Williams is really agile for a big guy.

Also, I don’t think the team would put McGovern ahead of Williams unless he’s just clearly better. If they’re about even, I think McGovern will watch as a rookie and be the primary backup at C/OG.

If McGovern does start over Williams... then they really hit on the guy and he is another pro bowl type as a rookie. Just my opinion.

DE - DLaw, Quinn, Taco
DT - Collins, Hill, Woods
DL - Crawford, Covington

can they get 40/+ sacks?

and who are the other two? Ross, Armstrong, Hyder, Jelks, Jackson, Gregory, Irving.
I'm guessing Ross and Armstrong coming out of camp, barring injuries or mental break downs

the bizarre thing is Gregory and Irving are the 2nd and 3rd best play makers in the group. CBA, soon come.
if either or both are on the field by game 8 - this is a really good DL, otherwise they're decent

Depth is better. Problem still is ... Rod is still just a bit crazy. IMO, Hill and Covington were forced on him by the FO.

Oddly, I think DT Covington and DL Hyder are two of the more interesting players to watch in the preseason.

Covington
- I'm not sure what to think about the report of Covington losing 30 pounds.
- That was the exact amount (30 pounds) that Woods was reported to have lost before camp last year.
- From the Houston game footage of Covington, he looked like he could play both 1-tech and 3-tech in the Marinelli scheme.
- He played as a 3-4 DE and sometimes at NT as well as some snaps when they played a 4-man line in some Nickel situations.
- A better backup 1-tech was a big need in the Rams game when Woods was injured but continued to play.
- They almost always have some DEs that could move over to play some snaps at 3-tech, but there was no true backup to Woods at 1-tech.
- Ideally the 4th DT would be able to play both 1-tech and 3-tech similar to T.McClain from a few years ago.
Hyder
- Hyder fits the mold of a bigger DE to rotate with Quinn. Last year they used Crawford or Taco to rotate with Gregory.
- Hyder seems to have some tweener ability like Crawford. I think Crawford's better at DT, whereas Hyder is better at DE.

Crawford
- Crawford has been a starter (ping ponging between DE & DT) the past 5 years.
- A true sign of progress will be if Crawford is no longer a starter.
- Crawford' s a good rotation player but as a starter has been average at best.
M.Collins
- The health of Collins affects multiple other players.
- If he is out or limited, then a DT to rotate with Hill becomes critical.
- That's probably Crawford; although Covington or even Hyder/Taco could be tried there.\
Bottom of the Depth Chart DL
Shakir Soto
- As a freshman played DT next to Aaron Donald.
- UDFA in 2017.
- Appears to have been tried at DE with the Bronco (3-4) and Raiders (4-3).
- Played 4-3 DT in the AAF and was regarded as one of the top players in that league.
- At 6-3, 290 his best fits appears to be 4-3 DT.
Daniel Wise
- UDFA 2019
- Played 3-4 DE and 4-3 DT in college (Kansas played multiple fronts)
- 6-3, 280
- Brugler and some others projected him to the 4th round.

Joe Jackson
- 5th round 2019
- 6-4, 275 with long arms.
- Powerful with decent quickness and decent measurable(s).
- Abundance of technique flaws.

Jalen Jelks
- 6-5, 256 with long arms.
- Only 2 DL had bigger wingspans in the 2019 draft.
- Oddly played as 2-gap 3-4 DE and as Nickel DT at Oregon.
- The Cowboys in recent years like to draft players that played out of position in college.
- At 256 he's was definitely not the typical 3-4 two-gap DE.
- Some D.Irving type moves where he uses length to win despite weight disadvantage against OL.
- DLaw only weighed 251 when drafted.
- There are some similar traits to DLaw (leverage style rusher more than bend the corner).
- I really like this players game footage.

I look at both and think the P word, Potential. There are some unknowns with Yosemite's recovery and Williams soph year but I feel better about the OL than the DL.

Lawrence is a solid performer, except he has faded at crunch time and when the real pass rushers show up is in the playoffs. Gregory is the 2nd best DE but an unknown as to availability presently. Quinn could be a real help; however, I am always 'why didn't his old team want him' when these guys are picked up. The DL interior is a ? with experience and health and a lot of hope is placed on the rookie DT.

And every year I see these posts about "depth" and most of the time when they have to play, it is not depth if there is a fall off.

I don't like fixing blame but the DL was flat out awful in LA and the LB's weren't much better. There are a lot of excuses made like cleats and injuries but they looked every bit as bad as those Rams rushing stats, most from a backup. The LOS, the trenches are all about two things, blocking and tackling and in LA they failed miserably at both.

I want to be optimistic but until I see what it last was isn't any longer, that doesn't change. All of this praise and talk about the OL, prove it!

Last year Dallas got 39 sacks. Across the board I think the DL starters and depth are equivalent or better than last year. We still have last year's 3 best DTs, and we added Hill and Covington. We still have Dlaw and Taco, Gregory is a question but Quinn is here now.

Point being, I think that if last year's group can do 39 (17th in league last year), then this year's group could pull down north of 40. There were incremental talent improvements and so all things considered an incremental jump in production seems reasonable.

A little surprised you think Covington and Hill were forced on Rod. Hill seems like a good fit for how Marinelli uses DTs and there's a lot to like about Covington.

the 30lbs thing bugs me too, IMO, Covington will be used much like Crawford,
and the 2 of them have to be the glue that makes this work,
both can play run outside and get some pressure inside or out,

if Covington is the athlete I think he is, he may still be able to play some D1 even with the weight off

I'm thinking DT rotation is Collins, Hill, Woods, and Crawford / Covington
which could mean come game day 9 DL rather than 8

The numbers never seem to add up on those weight related comments from coaches.

Maybe those guys gained a good bit of weight after the season and were really heavy when the Cowboys initially acquired them.

I'm certain that Woods was over 300 during the 2018 season but I highly doubt he was 330 or 340 when he was with the Titans.

Same with Covington. I doubt if he is under 300 now but I also doubt if he played at 330 or 340 in Houston.

yep, they have not made big investments at DT - which is where most would have started when switching from Wade's 3-4

I'm thinking in 2019 they get a few more sacks, via more inside pressure which hopefully means more INTs
but then if our DBs had better ball skills they'd all be WRs, they dropped a few

BTW, let's keep in kind this D is an experimental 4-2 designed to produce TOs, but hasn't produced TOs
they all but admit - it's true :)

Rod is still utterly suspect to me - but if the DTs can keep LVE and Jaylon clean to read and run ... his could a top 5 D

Depth is better. Problem still is ... Rod is still just a bit crazy. IMO, Hill and Covington were forced on him by the FO.

...continuing from my initial reply...

Hill
- Exactly the type of player Marinelli wants to play the Under-Tackle position.
- Marinelli says not all 3-techs are Under-Tackles (whatever that means).
- I think he means 3-techs in some other schemes don't fit his Under-Tackle position requirements.
- Marinelli says Hill the prototype Under-Tackle.

Covington
- Fits the Marinelli mold for 1-tech.
- Marinelli prefers 1-techs that are borderline 3-techs.
- Covington projects to combo 1-tech / 3-tech. Woods is 1-tech only.
- Paea and T.McClain were 1-tech types with some 3-tech abilities.

They almost always have 8 DL active on game day.
- They only had 7 DL active against the Rams.
- Daniel Ross and DE D.Armstrong were inactive despite not being on the injury report.
- Crawford (neck) and M.Collins (illness) played but were on the injury report.
- They've rarely carried 9 on the 46 game day roster.

Ross:
- Not very good, IMO.

Irving:
Gone. Suspended and not under contract with the Cowboys.
Free Agent if he returns from suspension.

Gregory:
- He'll be on the 53 if not suspended.
- It's better for roster management if he is suspended for 2 or 4 games.
- Roster spots are easier to find after a few weeks into the season.
- Even a 1 week suspension helps if they want to move somebody to IR with eligibility to return.
- Against the Gregory is good but Marinelli prefers to limit him to avoid wearing him down.
- They rotated a bigger DE with Gregory, with the bigger DE playing more on run downs.
- They'll likely use Quinn similar to how they used Gregory in 2018.
- They'll prefer a bigger DE to get the bulk of snaps rotating with Quinn.
- They could have DLaw play a few snaps at DT on 3rd & long situations.
- Quinn, Hill, DLaw, Gregory could be a 3rd and long lineup.

Ricky Walker
- Good name but extreme long-shot.
- Shortest arms and smallest wingspan of DL prospects in the 2019 draft.

Hyder:
- Quality NFL starter when he last played in a 4-3 (2016, DE).
- He was injured and his team had switched to 3-4 when he returned.

From my previous post(s):

Hyder
- Has position flex to plays some snaps at DT.
- Hyder fits the mold of a bigger DE to rotate with Quinn. Last year they used Crawford or Taco to rotate with Gregory.
- Hyder seems to have some tweener ability like Crawford. I think Crawford's better at DT, whereas Hyder is better at DE.

Crawford
- Crawford has been a starter (ping ponging between DE & DT) the past 5 years.
- A true sign of progress will be if Crawford is no longer a starter.
- Crawford' s a good rotation player but as a starter has been average at best.
- Crawford could be a surprise cut. His 7M salary is a bit high if he does not start.
M.Collins
- The health of Collins affects multiple other players.
- If he is out or limited, then a DT to rotate with Hill becomes critical.
- That's probably Crawford; although Covington or even Hyder/Taco could be tried there.\
- Showed great burst in some AAF plays.
Daniel Wise
