Coach Garrett addresses the media at the The Star.

The Cowboys head back to the field for practice today after locking down linebacker Jaylon Smith to a long-term extension. Still no news on the Dak/Zeke/Amari contracts, but hopefully those will happen soon. In the meantime, let’s see what coach had to say. (All answers are paraphrased and not actual quotes).

Jaylon Smith’s contract extension

Jason Garrett started things off by discussing the newest member of the Cowboys to get a long-term contract, Jaylon Smith. He talked about the first time that he saw him at the 2016 NFL Combine and noted how Smith impressed them right away.

He remarked that the Cowboys took a risk and that it has obviously worked out for them considering who Smith is as a football player and a person. He did note that this has been an emotional journey for Smith and that they’re all very excited about the future.

Jaylon’s best trait

Asked for Jaylon Smith’s best trait, Jason Garrett praised his middle linebacker. He discussed how he can run and hit and how great he is from a physical perspective. He also said he is always around the ball and has great instincts.

Jaylon’s very positive spirit

One of the things that Jerry Jones said about Smith was that the linebacker never complained about the situation he was dealt. Garrett echoed this sentiment and noted that he has never seen Smith have a bad day.

Chris Covington’s injury status

The Cowboys don’t anticipate linebacker Chris Covington (who was injured against the Rams) practicing on Wednesday. He’s dealing with a stinger.

DeMarcus Lawrence and Tyrone Crawford started off well

The Cowboys got Lawrence and Crawford back on Tuesday and Jason Garrett noted that they’re coming along well. He did say that they will not practice on Wednesday (hopefully will on Thursday) and that the focus with them is now Week 1.

Mike Jackson won’t practice on Wednesday

The rookie is a little banged up.

Devin Smith has shown up lately

One of the receivers who is making his case for the 53-man roster is Devin Smith. Jason Garrett complimented him a lot and noted that Smith certainly has a lot of experience. He talked about the big plays that he has made and how this has given him a lot of confidence. He discussed how the Cowboys liked him coming out of school and thought a change of scenery might be what he needed along with getting healthy.

Donovan Wilson was starting on Tuesday

There are some injury issues with the Cowboys right now, but rookie Donovan Wilson got opportunities with the first team on Tuesday. Jason Garrett didn’t expand too much on why they chose to throw Wilson in there and limited it to “he’s done some good things,” but that does seem like a vote of confidence in the rookie. He noted that Jeff Heath wasn’t able to have a full practice yesterday so they gave Wilson some of his reps.

What trait makes DeMarcus Lawrence special?

Asked about traits he’s seen in great pass rushers, Jason Garrett described that they all are extremely relentless. In addition to pass-rushing moves, Garrett said the great ones have a relentless motor and never give up. He remarked that Lawrence has been injured many times but still goes out on the field and produces.
