What did some see in this D?

All off season I kept seeing these posts/threads about the D stepping up and that being the difference in contender and true contender. And all off season, I kept looking for it, what was I missing?

Certainly couldn't have been the D's performance in LA to end the season. And it couldn't have been FA where they traded for another pass rusher. And it couldn't have been the draft where they picked a questionable player.

That only left one thing. Those posters are basing this on the improvement of the present D players: Lawrence, Woods, Collins, Smith, LVE, Awuzie and Heath and Jones is in a contract year. Or Richard is going to take over and weave that magic that he wove so well in SEA that his HC didn't want to keep him to rebuild the D.

I do not see this as a true contender D, I don't care who is coaching. I didn't see it and do not see it. These claims that another coach would have this team to the SB is the biggest self sell on this board.

I guess we look at it differently because I don't look at the strengths of the offense or defense, I look at the opposite, the real problem that coaching has to overcome. Richard was a better D coach in SEA because he had better talent. Marinelli was a better D coach in Chi and TB because he had better talent.

Booger's learned nothing from those glory years. If he's not focused on the triplets, it's a war daddy at DE like he had with Haley. But he forgets, Haley wasn't the key to that great D, it was the one player that he has failed to replace in that D, the Safety.

There was no player more important to that successful run than Darren Woodson, he was the cement that held it together. If you want to see a remarkable difference, look at the stat difference when an elite S is out vs in.

When I played FF, the first place I looked for starting a RB was against Indy and was Bob Sanders in or out? In, I wouldn't start anyone, out, I always started someone. The difference he made was astounding, his presence cut the yards in at least half and altered OC's plans. One guy, but a special guy when he was healthy.

This team is missing the key ingredient because that great D in BAL wouldn't have been great without Ed Reed. Harrison Smith is the DMVP of the Vikings every year. Until this team places the proper priority on that position, I will not see it in this D.

This is the same run defense that was gashed for 123 yards and two td's by overweight and currently unemployed C.J. Anderson in the playoffs last season.

Bad scheme , JAG defensive tackles and 2nd rate safeties = A defense that can't stop an offense when it truly counts.

I thought the depth in the LB core would hide some of the deficiencies of the defensive line. It hasn't. I thought the secondary would be one of the best in the NFL. They are not. I thought Chidobe Awuzie was an NFL player. He is not. I thought Kris Richard taking over play calling would lead to a more aggressive defense that played more disciplined. They aren't and don't. I see all the finger pointing at Marinelli and justly so, but this entire defensive staff needs to be wiped away from top to bottom and that includes Kris. There's a reek to this defense that's been with them for years and and cleaning up a couple of assistants here and there isn't going to get rid of the smell that's embedded in our carpet, the drapes, our upholstery, and our souls.

I guess it’s too loud on the field to hear your teammates yelling “ball, ball” so the DB knows to turn his head but what happened to watching the WR eyes and to turn when the eyes get bigger? Is this taught here or are those outdated techniques??

I hated the appointment of Monte Kiffin at the time and the succession in Rod.
I see nothing in this scheme to be excited about going forward....
Jerry went from going too complicated with a disorganized goof as a DC (Rob) to straight Special Ed teacher with sandbox as his repertoire as his replacement and has kept it ever since.
It won't get better with Richard.

On paper it looked "good" with some flaws.

Linebackers had an All-Pro rookie and Smith was looking healthy and making plays.
D-Law repeated his contract year play and had two years of positive play.
Added Quinn at RDE
Hope that Awuzie would continue to develop along with X. Woods.
Jones had a great year and Ant Brown looked solid in the slot.
Questions still at DT

Didn't expect our 2nd rounder to be completely useless.
Heath started out ok then reverted.
Linebackers regressed.
etc...

Yea, but I saw a video of Richard yelling and firing up the defense so he was supposed to fix all the issues.
