All off season I kept seeing these posts/threads about the D stepping up and that being the difference in contender and true contender. And all off season, I kept looking for it, what was I missing?
Certainly couldn't have been the D's performance in LA to end the season. And it couldn't have been FA where they traded for another pass rusher. And it couldn't have been the draft where they picked a questionable player.
That only left one thing. Those posters are basing this on the improvement of the present D players: Lawrence, Woods, Collins, Smith, LVE, Awuzie and Heath and Jones is in a contract year. Or Richard is going to take over and weave that magic that he wove so well in SEA that his HC didn't want to keep him to rebuild the D.
I do not see this as a true contender D, I don't care who is coaching. I didn't see it and do not see it. These claims that another coach would have this team to the SB is the biggest self sell on this board.
I guess we look at it differently because I don't look at the strengths of the offense or defense, I look at the opposite, the real problem that coaching has to overcome. Richard was a better D coach in SEA because he had better talent. Marinelli was a better D coach in Chi and TB because he had better talent.
Booger's learned nothing from those glory years. If he's not focused on the triplets, it's a war daddy at DE like he had with Haley. But he forgets, Haley wasn't the key to that great D, it was the one player that he has failed to replace in that D, the Safety.
There was no player more important to that successful run than Darren Woodson, he was the cement that held it together. If you want to see a remarkable difference, look at the stat difference when an elite S is out vs in.
When I played FF, the first place I looked for starting a RB was against Indy and was Bob Sanders in or out? In, I wouldn't start anyone, out, I always started someone. The difference he made was astounding, his presence cut the yards in at least half and altered OC's plans. One guy, but a special guy when he was healthy.
This team is missing the key ingredient because that great D in BAL wouldn't have been great without Ed Reed. Harrison Smith is the DMVP of the Vikings every year. Until this team places the proper priority on that position, I will not see it in this D.
