My Father joined the Marines because of Pearl Harbor and stayed in for 30 years. He was the 1st wave at Peleiou(One of the bloodiest in the Pacific. Fought at Tarawa(again 1st wave) ,Okinowa,Guadal Canal,Iwa Jima he got stabbed by a Japanese Soldier in Okinowa but he killed the Japanese Soldier who was hiding in a ditch after the whole Marine Company passed him.(My Dad was the rear guard on that formation). My Dad says I kind of feel embarrassed that I got wounded, but that other guy won't tell anyone. LOL.Served in Korea and Vietnam also.

That is amazing.
Talk about beating the odds.

There are a couple of in color WWII documentary series currently on Netflix
I watched "WWII in Colour". All 13 episodes. Incredible
Man, the fighting going island to island in the Pacific was nasty....and the very reason lives had to be "saved" by using the big bombs. The Japanese would fight till death, even if it meant losing their entire population....and would take as many Allied Troops with them as possible.

Netflix has their own series called "Greatest Evenets of WWII in Colour". I haven't watched that

When the Japanese launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, sailor Lauren Bruner was the second-to-last person to get off the USS Arizona alive.

Bruner and five others were stranded on the doomed ship when a sailor on a repair ship spotted them and threw them a line. Even though Bruner was badly burned and had been shot twice, the 21-year-old managed to climb to safety.

He died in September at the age of 98, and on Saturday, his remains will return to the USS Arizona. He is expected to be the final USS Arizona survivor to be interred on the sunken warship, Pearl Harbor National Memorial spokesperson Jay Blount tells NPR.

It's a heck of a place to visit.

The place in real life seemed much smaller to me than what you see in pics and movies of the event.

The 3 sailors trapped in the Oklahoma (I believe) for a couple weeks until they ran out of air has always bothered me greatly.

What many do not know is there was an attempt to remove bodies from the Arizona based on pressure from relatives of the dead/missing, but it was a fruitless endeavor in that many of the bodies were so mangled that making accurate identification was near impossible. The explosion within the Arizona was incredibly destructive.

So they just decided to leave it/them as they were.

If ever in Hawaii, I highly recommend a visit
The flight time is what has bothered me weighing vacations. It will be tops on my list of places to visit if-and-when I do go.

I had two co-workers fortunate enough to win trips to Hawaii. Neither visited the USS Arizona Memorial while there, even after I mentioned it in conversation before they departed on their trips. Hawaii does seem like the ideal vacation destination but I would think any American would automatically put the site on their to-do list.

The flight can be rough depending where you are coming from. I suggest fly to San Diego, spend a day or two then off to Hawaii

It is a miracle Bruner and his few shipmates survived the disaster. What a fitting tribute to rejoin to his fellow heroes in the hereafter.
As a veteran myself I love hearing their stories.....truly heart warming. Back when I would have a few beers at the VFW I enjoyed talking with them more than I did Vietnam vets.
