You had me at fat guy in the middle! I think Nolan will have something to work with for his scheme.

Looking at some UFA players he's leaving in NO that might fit for DAL are:
DE Noah Spence
LB AJ Klein
CB PJ Williams
SS Von Bell

Klein and Von Bell, come on over to DAL

McCarthy had Gilbert Brown and BJ Rahi at NT. Expect us to change our personnel on the DL.

I think they would love to retain Quinn, but I think he's going to get a fatter contract on the market.

We've needed some big space eaters in the middle for years. With so many FA's at the position, pretty safe to say that this group is going to look much different in 2020.

Quinn is a great pass rusher but he is a liability against the run. Teams that disguise their play packages well will run left side when he's in the game. He is a situational player and should be paid as much.

If we had thumpers at LB who could make up for his weakness against the run then we should try to resign him. Or some good run stuffing DTs.

Even though Nolan cut his teeth by running 3-4 defenses, it's unlikely we transition to that anytime soon with the way our personnel looks. Seems like an easy call that we'll stay with a 4-3.

In looking at what Nolan really like in his players, it amounts to the following:

1. Big bodies in the middle to help take on blockers and keep his LB's clean
2. Small, quick DE's (260 lbs. or so) valuing pure speed and bend over size
3. Linebackers who are quick and can run. Blitzing, ability to track backs and TE's off the ball
4. Cornerbacks that are long and rangy

With that in mind, I would expect our DT's to get beefed up a bit. Guys like Javon Kinlaw, Leki Fotu, Marvin Wilson fit the profile of run stuffers who could help bolster our inside

Man i'd love to be able to get some of these guys in FA to supplement the draft to beef up the Defense:

DE:
resign Robert Quinn 3/30 mill 10mil a season, and if we get Smokey the 94 bandit to come back we are set if not we have several long armed 260lb guys

DT:
A'Shawn Robinson - DT Alabama (Detroit)
Danny Shelton - DT Washington (New England)
Maliek Collins - maybe we Bring him back with a new DLine coach see what he can do.

CB:
Gotta resign Brown and let those long guys we have stashed play see if they are any good.

S:
Ha Ha Clinton-Dix
Karl Joseph

I think that defense has to be this entire team's biggest focus. Between McCarthy and Moore (assuming he's retained, which I expect), the offensive side is covered. But the defense has holes all over the place and tons of questions. I think most of, if not all of the upcoming draft needs to focus on defensive players and a complete overhaul and makeover.

I'd also expect to see a concerted effort to retain Robert Quinn at defensive end.

In terms of cap and free agency? Yeah, most of that money is going to the offense and Dak and Cooper, but there might be a mid-level free agent brought in at defensive tackle or cornerback. I don't think they can or will pay to keep Byron Jones.

I would cringe if they wanted to go back to a 3-4. It never took off here with Parcells and they would have to think about replacing much of the front 7.

theres no excuse why these dbs cant
They're trying to keep up with NFL receivers, for starters.

What you did when you were 14 or playing flag football or whatever is irrelevant.

Never quite understood why Marinelli had no need for one in his scheme.
Woods is pretty much as good as it gets for a modern day NT.

Tackles who can't get any push up the field are absolutely useless in today's NFL, and Dallas' run defense got killed on the edges, not up the middle.

Could see us being a bit more active in free agency especially at DT. Wouldn't mind our 1st round pick being either a safety or DT.

A defense built like this would get smoked, because you'd never get a pass rush without blitzing every play.

If they are big and athletic; it would work. But two "bacon grease" oozing, clowns in the middle, won't do it.
