NO LONG-TERM DEAL FOR DANSBY

Posted by Mike Florio on July 15, 2008, 8:11 a.m.
By signing his one-year franchise tender earlier in the offseason, Cardinals linebacker Karlos Dansby lost most of his leverage in talks for a long-term deal.
And so it’s no surprise that, with the period for signing franchise players to long-term contracts coming expiring on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m., Dansby won’t be inking a multi-year deal.
Per the Arizona Republic, the Cardinals want to pay Dansby a contract that averages $6 million per year. Dansby wants $9 million per year.
Because he has signed the tender offer, Dansby is under contract for 2008, and will make $8.065 million, an amount which became fully guaranteed once Dansby signed the tender.
If the Cardinals use the franchise tag on Dansby again in 2009, the one-year offer will be $9.65 million.
The Tuesday deadline means only that franchise players can’t be signed to multi-year deals. All other franchise tag rules apply, including the provision that allows the team to rescind the offer if the player has not yet signed it.

Thats alot of money for a linebacker. With Ware next year, could he be the 1st 10 mil per year linebacker ?

HECK YEAH

We are going to be losing some good young talent in the near future. Hope we choose the right ones to keep.

You also know if a potenial #1 WR becomes available, Jerry is going to throw some money at that position.

The position Ware plays means he should be paid like the top DE in the league.

If we ever move back to the 4-3 ..... thats what he will be playing.

Yeah but we are a 3-4 team. He is our starting LB. I know he plays LB/DE.

Just stating that his pay increase will have an effect on our future decisions unfortunately.

Ware's deal will start where Dwight Freeney's is now.

Yes, but his agent will argue that we are a 3-4 team, and until that changes Ware should be payed as a LB, and not a DE.

I believe DEs tend to make more than OLBs.

I think you have that backwards, DEs get more than LBs. So maybe that might be Jerry's angle but I don't think that will happen.

His agent will want him paid like a DE .....

Well then it will be Jerry's angle :p

and you were right zrinkill lol.

I guess i assumed LB make more than DE's.

I do not think so ..... Jerry has always paid his Superstars above and beyond the "going price"

There is no way Jerry will "nickel and dime" a 25 year old kid with incredible character, who is already the best at his position.

He will pay him like a top DE in this league .....

The two hardest spots on the roster to fill are pass rusher and QB. We've got our QB inked. I would rather have Ware's deal in place before Hamlin is signed and we should not pursue a long-term Hamlin deal if it will affect our ability to re-sign Ware

. My guess is we are waiting on Ware until after the 2009 season because 2010 is looking like it might be uncapped. Furthermore, if it is uncapped Ware will not be an eligible FA (only 5 years service).

Pass rushers. Regardless of whether you call them DEs or LBs are top money guys.

As with every deal it will seem huge at first, will then be revealed to be smartly structured, and then eventually surpassed by so many others that it looks like a bargain two years down the road.

They are the hardest to fill with elite players. And of course elite players at those positions have the most impact on the game.

Let me be the first to step out on the limb and guess Ware's next contract.

He's under contract for 2008 and 2009. So he's not due a new deal til after the 2009 season. It might be in the Cowboys best interest to go that route. It looks like we will have an uncapped 2010. If that's the case all FAs in 2010 will have to have 6 years played. Ware will only have 5 and not be an unrestricted FA.

But knowing Jerry, he won't go that route. He'll get a deal done with Ware after the 2008 season. The fact that he's tearing up 2009 and that Ware was unlikely to be a FA in 2010 will factor into the negotiations.

I'll guess it's a 9 yr deal for 90 mil. He'll get a 27 mil SB. His cap numbers will look like this:
2009 6mil 2010 6mil 2011 7mil 2012 8mil 2013 9mil 2014 12mil 2015 13mil 2016 14mil 2017 15mil

After we win the Super Bowl next February, Ware will want the big bucks.

It's going to take some pretty deep pockets to sign that bad boy.

There's no way Ware is going anywhere. He'll get what he's worth. Knowing Jerry, he'll get a little more just to make it the biggest news story of whatever day it happens. :laugh2:

And so far, he has earned every penny.
