How has everyone been? I haven't been in here in a while. I've been slipping on my draft prep, usually I would have had a couple of versions out, but I've caught up enough to be able to throw one out now. So as always, let me know what you think.
With no free agency period before the draft, we're looking at more holes than usual to fill. My top areas of need for the team are: Offensive Line (1.OT,2.G/C), the Secondary (1.CB,2.FS,3.SS), and Defensive Line (1.DE,2.NT). Sprinkle in a big back, if we are finally going to get rid of Barber, a nice all around solid WR, and of course some OLB depth, and I think you have what we will be looking for.
I think if we play our cards right we can get an impact player at, at least 5 of those positions. I will include any trade that I think we could potentially pull off. With all that said, here's the mock:
I believe we are sitting in a catbird seat at #9. When our time on the clock finally comes I can see Prince Amukamara, one of AJ Green or Julio Jones, and Robert Quinn all still on the board. Teams will be very interested in jumping up. We use this in our advantage and squeeze DET for their 1st, 2nd, and 5th for our 1st and 6th. I don't know if that matches up on the "all-mighty trade value chart", but it seems fair price if they want to jump to take a guy (Prince), that we would happily snatch up at #9.
1. (13) Tyron Smith, USC-- 6'5, 307, OT.. This is the guy we wanted all along. Very strong, athletic tackle with long arms and great feet. Pencil him in at Columbo's RT immediately. Remember how the run game looked when Free was playing RT, with him pulling around the corner and destroying DB's? We're about to see that again.
2. (40) Stephen Paea, Oregon St.-- 6'1, 303, DT.. I know Rex said he's cool with Ratliff at NT, but he's got to know that Rat's motor and pass rush could be used much better at DE. Picking up this monster, makes it easier to slide Rat over and feel comfortable about stopping the run.
2. (44) Aaron Williams, Texas-- 6', 204, CB/FS.. I know he's listed as a corner, but I see him playing FS for us. And being able to slide down into coverage. Alan Ball's replacement.
3. (71) Allen Bailey, Miami-- 6'3, 285, DE.. Another physical marvel. This is a kid who slid all over the U's defense, starting at MLB, then to DT, and finally DE. Monster pass rusher, and can hold his own in run game. Just needs to play consistently and stay healthy.
4. (110) John Moffitt, Wisconsin-- 6'3, 319, G/C.. Tough, agile lineman, that can be groomed to replace Kosier, Davis, or Gurode. Gives us quality depth on the interior.
5. (143) Deunta Williams, UNC-- 6'1, 215, FS.. This is our centerfielder type FS pick. One of the best ball hawking safeties in college, if not for the injury would be a 1st or 2nd rounder IMO. He takes over fellow Tar Heel Gerald Sensabaugh's spot.
5. (154) Ronald Johnson, USC-- 5'11, 199, WR.. I know we have Miles, Dez, and Roy, but I'm not sold on Roy being here next year, and Hurd just doesn't have my confidence as a slot WR. I'd rather keep Dez and Miles outside and get another weapon in the slot. Johnson is sure handed, quick, and built for it.
7. (219) Darren Evans, VA Tech-- 6', 220, RB.. He's a late round replacement for Marion Barber's tough running style, and may a bit faster. I fully expect Barber to be traded once this get cleared up, and this guys provides us with a tough inside runner to complement Felix and Tashard.
7. (251) **comp pick** DeMarcus Van Dyke, Miami-- 6'1, 180, CB.. I thought we should have taken a shot at grabbing Sam Shields last year, a similar CB from the U, and he turned out pretty well. This kid has all the measureables, he just a raw talent. For some reason, the coaching staff under Shannon wasn't getting full potential out of the kids down there.
