2 gamblers take NJ casino for more than $11M

By WAYNE PARRY, Associated Press Wayne Parry, Associated Press – Tue Jun 7, 1:20 pm ET

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – Lightning has struck twice at the Tropicana Casino and Resort, which has lost more than $11 million to just two high-stakes gamblers since April.

Just weeks after a blackjack player beat the casino for $5.8 million, a different gambler won $5.3 million last week.

Yet despite the huge losses, the Tropicana is sticking with its new emphasis on high-stakes table games play, confident that things will eventually run it its favor.

"That's just how it goes sometimes; if you bet more, you can win more," said Tony Rodio, the Tropicana's president and CEO. "We have a strategy of offering the most aggressive and highest table games limits in the Atlantic City market and we're not going to change that. If someone wants to take the shot, we'll take the action."

Lately it's the Tropicana that's been getting taken.

In April, Bensalem, Pa., gambler Don Johnson beat the casino for $5.8 million at blackjack, part of a spectacular roll that also saw him beat Caesars Atlantic City for more than $4.2 million and the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa for $5 million. His winning story was first reported by The Press of Atlantic City.

Rodio would not identify last week's winner, citing the casino's policy to keep the identities of its players confidential. But he did say it was not Johnson.
Last Wednesday's winner hit big at the craps table, where he was betting $100,000 at a time. He also did well at blackjack and mini-baccarat, Rodio said.

The man left a $150,000 tip for dealers when he was done raking the casino; it was divided up among table games dealers on duty that night.

Split that 150K?

Wha??????

He could split it with the other dealers who were working that table as well or he could get his butt kicked and not get any of it while the other dealers split it. :D

He made the right choice. :laugh1:

I thought they were saying they split with all the dealers.

Probably policy that over "x" amount, the split goes into effect.

I do actually feel for the casino.

Why?

If they won big money from these guys, they'd call for an end to gambling and say that the casinos prey upon people, etc.

Can't win.

I think most who go understand the odds are with the house. Especially those who are willing to bet large amounts as these guys did.

Myself I love going to Lake Tahoe and playing at the casino there. Dealers are friendly and just more relaxing than in Vegas

Lemme guess: they've both been banned from ever gambling there again.

Shoot Casino loves it because it helps bring others in. If everyone walked out a loser few would continue to go but when they see a story like this people start to envision themselves striking it big and gamble at the casino

No doubt. I saw a news show that was showing all these "Whales" gamblers with big money to go to these casino and dropping millions. Casino has people at the airport waiting to pick them up their rooms are complimentry and are given the royal treament but it comes with the understanding that these guys are going to be betting a minimum of 500,000 thousand. One of those Whales who goes on a reg basis is Larry Flynt owner of Hustler mag. and this guy drops some major dollars

I heard Atlantic City was pretty much going under.

Can't imagine this is gong to help.

I always thought that those in favor of legalized gambling should have to visit Atlantic City and look around. IIRC it was one of the 1st proclaiming that gambling would save the city.

Gambling is never a good thing. It's like what smoking does to the lungs. Slowly rots them away until finally it's brutally painful and usually results in death.

Unless your winning.:laugh2:

I have to admit I enjoy gambling. I don't go very often and when I do I only go with what I'm willing to lose and always enjoy myself.

So many seem to spend what they can't afford to lose.

A summary visit would dispel that notion and show that it is anything but 'saved'. I'm always amazed when people invite me to spend a weekend in AC.

I wonder what will become of all the hookers and dealers (the illegal kind) if it would fall.

They would continue hookers, drug dealers and pimps are in most cities regardless of casinos or not.

I love it when a casino gets hit hard, but I would rather it have been some low roller starting at a $5 table and making a sick run!

Same here. I look at it the same way as going to dinner or other form of entertainment, I am there to have fun and only bring with me what I wiling to lose. Expecting to win when luck is such a big factor is just moronic in my opinion.
