The Cowboys have completed their OTAs and minicamp practices. The offseason is history. Training camp in Oxnard is up next in late July.

The staff writers at DallasCowboys.com – Rob Phillips, David Helman, Nick Eatman and Bryan Broaddus – are attempting to answer 20 pressing questions as the team gets ready for camp and the 2016 season.

Today, our staff begins the series by discussing how the team should proceed at linebacker following Thursday’s news that NFL has suspended Rolando McClain for the first 10 games of the regular season.

20) With Rolando McClain facing a 10-game suspension, how do the Cowboys adjust at linebacker?

Nick Eatman:
The Cowboys can definitely call this a setback, but if they are surprised or better yet, not prepared for what happened to McClain, that's their own fault. In two years, he's shown them nothing that says you can fully count on him being ready to play. Personally, the adjustment I would make is to cut ties with him. Even though he wouldn't take up a roster spot, I think enough is enough and it's time to move on. As for the question, I think the Cowboys turn to Anthony Hitchens. I've always liked him in the middle. Anyone who can get 18 tackles in a game as a rookie seems to have something figured out. I think Mark Nzeocha will factor into the mix but I would go with Hitchens for now. Last year they cut Jasper Brinkley after camp. This year it could be the Cowboys in the market for that kind of established vet.

Bryan Broaddus: The one positive note about Rolando McClain skipping the OTAs was it gave the coaches the opportunity to use some different combinations at his spot. Andrew Gachkar took the majority of the snaps with the first defense and the nickel but I see him more in that core special teamer role and not as a starter. Anthony Hitchens was used in the rotation. Hitchens was the starter for the first four games last season while McClain was on suspension and did not play poorly. Hitchens averaging a little more than seven tackles per game as the starter. The coaches ideally would like to play him at WILL behind Sean Lee and continue his role on special teams. The wild card here in my opinion is Mark Nzeocha. I like his physical makeup to handle the position but there is a learning curve. I have no problem giving him as many snaps as possible to see if he can do the job going forward.

David Helman: Next man up, as the saying goes. It’s obviously disappointing to see one of the more talented players on the defense throw away 60 percent of his season, but you can hardly call it surprising in the case of Rolando McClain. I doubt the Cowboys will look outside the current roster to find his replacement, and I doubt they’ll move Sean Lee away from the weak side. The two guys who manned the position while McClain was absent this spring were Andrew Gachkar and Anthony Hitchens, and I assume they’ll get the first crack in training camp. Mark Nzeocha is a name that will probably get thrown around in the next month, but I’m going to lean toward experience. I think Hitchens and Lee will be your primary two linebackers when the Cowboys line up against New York in Week 1.

Rob Phillips: McClain’s suspension is a setback for the defense, no question about it, because of the way he can impact a game. But the team has been through this before, haven’t they? Anthony Hitchens is a guy the Cowboys have been able to depend on at all three linebacker spots for the last two years. In 2015 he started the first four games at middle linebacker during McClain’s previous suspension, and while he’s a bit undersized at 235 pounds, adding Cedric Thornton to the defensive line should help protect him up front. Hitchens could be the first option to start in McClain’s place, though Mark Nzeocha is a good athlete with a bigger frame. Regardless, I don’t think you move Sean Lee from the weak-side spot. He was too productive there last year. It’s the best place in Rod Marinelli’s defense for him to roam and make plays...

Let me go: Lee, Nzeocha, and Hitchens as the started three linebackers against the Giants.

With Jaylon Smith going into the mike position next season, the linebacker group should grow this season, into a strong unit by next season.

I'm with Nick Eatman. Cut ties with McClain immediately. And I also think that Hitchens gets first crack at the job in the middle.

Who plays strong side then?

At 6 feet, 235 pounds, Hitchens doesn't have the size of the 6-4, 255-pound McClain. Nor does he bring the physical presence to the defense that defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli often raves about. But he runs well, has good instincts and is a good tackler.

Wilber has played Sam when Hitchens was at Mike. Nate Newton loved that he was re-signed, likes how he sets the edge.

Agreed its Lee, Hitchens, and Wilber who are the week 1 starters. The backups of Nzeocha, Wilson, and Gachkar dont give me much confidence right now, they should add a veteran. This is a pretty thin group, someone has to step up.

The directions for changes are some of what the team is discussing right now...lol.

You have faith in Hitchens at Mike and Wilber at the strong side?

Training camp, this fan will be watching the linebackers and defensive ends...

When Lee has his eventual physical breakdown this may be one of the weakest LB units in the league.

Damn, and to think I was worried about the Dline and secondary.

They just might surprise...and that goes for the entire defensive bunch. If nothing else, those that remain, do have commitment and a little fire.

Not being afraid, still sometimes lands one on his butt. But they get up and get better afterwards!

This 2016 defense is better than the 2014 version though. Heres how I see the comparison:

LCB=push
RCB=push
FS=Edge 2016, B. Jones is a likely upgrade over Wilcox
SS= push
WLB= Edge 2016, Lee is better than Carter
MLB= Edge 2014, Mcclain had a pretty good 2014 campaign. Hitchens will be solid if he starts but Mcclain is better
SLB= push Hitchens ended up holding down this spot and played well with injuries to Durant. Wilber should be solid
DE= Edge 2016, Mincey played well in 2014, but Lawrence and the depth behind him is better than 2014. First 4 games may be a push.
DE= Edge 2016, Selvie produced only 3 sacks, players like Crawford, Irving, Russell, Tapper, and Gregory should be atleast marginally better
DT= Edge 2016, Would venture to guess a 2016 Tyrone Crawford is better than the 2014 version
DT= Edge 2016, Thorton is a big upgrade in the middle over Hayden. The depth is also better with Jackson

Bottom line even with concerns along the dline and lb were atleast marginally better in 2016. DT and S are likely to be most improved, the rest is wait and see.

For Dallas Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee, most of his six-year career has been full of lost opportunities. Those lost chances had nothing to do at all with his undeniable talent and everything to do with his availability.

The Cowboys 2010 second round selection out of Penn State, Lee came into the NFL with an extensive injury history. The former Nittany Lion tumbled down draft boards mainly due to that reason. Lee missed the entire 2008 season with a torn ACL in his right knee. Then he played with a 80-percent torn left ACL during his final season in college.

Lee suffered nagging injuries throughout training camp that limited the young linebacker during his rookie season with the Cowboys. But he showed his potential the following year posting 105 total tackles, seven pass defends and four interceptions starting in 15 games.

But Lee would miss a total of 31 games during the next three years in Dallas, including the entire 2014 regular season after tearing his ACL once again. This time during OTAs.
Although the Cowboys are coming off a terrible year which saw them plummet to a 4-12 season-ending record, Lee is coming off his best year as a professional. Starting 14 games, the 29-year old linebacker recorded a career-high 128 tackles. He also posted five pass defends, 2.5 sacks and had one interception in 2015.

Lee earned his first Pro Bowl nomination last year as well. Although he’s got a long way to go before shedding the injury-prone label, the soon-to-be 30-year old is finally getting the recognition he deserves as one of the best linebackers in the NFL.
