They played all 4 TEs. McKeon averaged 14% of the offensive snaps. I normally don't expect to see the 4th TE play unless it's as an injury replacement.

McKeon played as a move TE (H-Back and FB) as well as some snaps inline.

McKeon only had 2 total catches for the season.

They obviously thought McKeon could perform certain blocking tasks better than the other TEs.
- Otherwise, why use a TE that wasn't part of their plans as a receiver?

With Schoonmaker, they get a lead receiving TE than can replace McKeon's move blocking duties.

Ferguson will be the primary inline blocker.

Schoonmaker: Top receiver and top move blocker.
Ferguson: Top inline blocker.
Hendershot: A little bit of everything.

I was really kind of surprised when we had three tight ends out there quite a bit, especially when one was McKeon. Didn't seem like the talent warranted that. But I guess our talent at WR didn't exactly warrant keeping them off the field either.

Schultz did miss some time, which led to more snaps for McKeon.

Schultz missed 2 games.

McKeon missed one of those games.

In the 1 game that McKeon played when Schultz was out, he had 9 snaps. He averaged 10 snaps for the season.

He had a specific role. They made up for missed games by Schultz primarily with more snaps for Ferguson.

I saw him out there certainly more than I ever expected he'd be. Still think it was a product of us not having much faith in the receivers.

MM clearly wants to go back to lots of 2 te sets. Now he has two tes that block well and catch. This helps both the run and the pass.

McKeon and Schoon were in the same tight end room in college I think, that’ll be some Wolverine-on-Wolverine crime if this ends up playing out that way roster spot wise. My assumption was they’d just keep 4 again.

It is interesting. Shultz basically played every snap when healthy.

You'll be more surprised at the production when we did it. If I had one thing to cry about last season (outside of the usual fan things like injury, why is so and so still starting, and QB etc) it'd be not utilizing the 3 TE set more.

I would expect less of it this year after upgrading the receiver room with Cooks, but I won't be surprised if we use the 3-TE set more than I'm expecting. Both Ferguson and Hendershot showed the ability to play on this level, and we've added Schoonmaker. It will be interesting to see what McCarthy has in mind.

It was very effective when running the ball as well.

Our deployments sucked. So basically what you are saying is that when McKeon was in the game you knew to look for stretches and pitches. That and those idiotic reverses.

The pass protections have been changed. One key component of our protection for the past 20 years has been a one dimensional reliance on RB for 6 man protections. Hopefully that changes up.

No more timing and option routes. No fixating on the curl and deep in cat and mouse game.

We were able to do this because of our poor WR situation

McCarthy already said, you need as many 6'4'' players as you can get, because they play STs, too.
