What do you grade the 2023 Draft Class after half a season of production?
1) Mazi Smith - 5 tackles (Prescott, Gallup, Tyler Smith, and Tolbert combine for 5 thus far)
2) Luke Schoonmaker - 3 catches
3) DeMarvion Overshown - IR
4) Viliami Fehoko Jr. - No Stats
5) Asim Richards -
6) Eric Scott Jr. - No Stats
6) Deuce Vaughn - 20 carries 40 yards - 2.0 ypc
7) Jalen Brooks - No Stats
Roll drum............... 2023 draft class re-grade = F
I’ll be the first to admit it, not looking good.
I understand Mazi needing some time to develop as a raw 1-tech prospect, but when is the last time you saw a player go from grading out as the worst at his position in the entire league (per pff) to good? It does not happen. Generally the guys that are going to work out at least start flashing in their rookie year.
Schoon was just a weird pick given the needs at other positions. He has been a fine blocker, but almost completely anonymous as a receiver. I think he will be a fine role player, but for a second that is very disappointing.
Overshown was looking like a dog in preseason, so I’ve got hope for him. He may be the only starting player to come out of this class.
Richards has shown enough to make us believe he can be a nice swing tackle, which is a win for a 5th rounder.
Everyone else is probably not going to be on this team in a year or two.
That is a BAD draft no matter how you cut it and for a Cowboys team that needs the draft to constantly be producing due to their hesitancy to participate in free agency, a few more like this could be disastrous.
Right now I’m going to give this draft a D-, not an F because Overshown looks like a player but we haven’t seen him in a real game yet.
Of course, in a year or two things could change but I am not holding my breath.
