2023 Mock Draft - March 30th from a McClay, McCarthy, and Quinn View
I understand many will not agree with the mock and totally fine with it. Many will think this player or that player will go earlier or later yet we all know the draft is unpredictable and guys fall and guys rise the day of the draft so who really knows.
Going to base this draft from mainly the coaches point of view based on the now and the future. McCarthy is on the hot seat to not only make the playoffs but to also get to at least the NFC Championship game. Drafts should be based on what we know the Cowboys have but also what the future needs also. It also has to be heavy on what fits the need of the offensive and defensive coach feels they need to be sucessful.
From an offensive point, McCarthy is going to run the ball and damn the metrics of what the league is doing. We are likely to see far more RPO than before, although this means we will need much better blocking from the OL and TE position as well as downfield blocking from the WR.
On a defensive side, it starts with stopping the run and resigning Hankins helps quite a bit but we need some of those young guys like Gallimore, Bohanna, Osi and heck maybe even Alarcon to really step up there game. Our young LB, CB and S all need to take the next step if they want to remain. So here goes the mock with explanation as to why.
31. Joe Tippmann OC/OG Wisconsin - believe Dallas will trade down with KC for #95. Has the ability to start at LG opening day, one of the strongest and most athlete and intelligent player in the draft. Biadasz is in the final year of his contract and has shown improvement year to year but Tippmann is a better overall center who could also move to center if Biadasz not resigned. A great run blocker as well as pass blocker, tall for a center but didn't hurt his game. Fits the mean tasty that McCarthy like on the line.
58. Darnell Washington TE Georgia - the question will be if he is there at 58. See a lot of Jason Witten in him as an athlete and team player. Probably the best blocking TE in the draft by far and still learning routes but an excellent red zone guy. McCarthy's TEs will need to really block this year as well as catch but three TE sets with Washington, Ferguson and Hendershot would be excellent. If we don't get Washington then we either draft Schoonmaker or Strange in the 3rd/4th range.
90. Jahmyr Gibbs RB Alabama - he may not be here at 90 although could see Dallas trade up in the 3rd to get him or just wait until 4th or 5th round to take a RB. Really only see Robinson as being the only back taken in the 1st two rounds. Gibbs can run inside or outside, great hands, very good blocker and excellent at picking up the blitz. Provides a good compliment to Pollard with two speed backs. Dallas could very well take two RB in the draft but they also could bring back Zeke as the 3rd down back after the draft on a one year deal at $5 million also. Gibbs also gives them protection if Pollard isn't extended for 3 years.
95. Andre Carter II DE Army - this pick screams Quinn with his ability to rush the passer from multiple positions like he uses Parsons. Both of them on the field during obvious passing downs will be a nightmare for defenses. It is also a perfect Jerry Jones pick with a guy that is a risk due to his Army obligation.
133. Jaylon Jones CB/S Texas A&M - trade with Chicago giving up #129, #169 for #133, #136, and #148 - big kid with long arms, could see Quinn make him 1st a ST guy and then transition him at S especially with Kearse and Hooker on short term deals. Plays a lot like Wilson at S. Needs at least a year to be impact player.
136. Jack Campbell LB Iowa - definitely a LVE type that should be able to back up LVE in year one. Very good run stopper, very strong and good hands to get blockers off him. Good all around player. A Quinn type of relentless on defense type player.
148. Andrew Vorhees OL USC - if not for the injury at the combine, probably goes day 2 early, should be a starting OG after recovering from knee injury, flex positon as either LG or RG or RT. Could easily see he and Tippman as the LG and C for 2024. Very good run blocker and excellent pass blocker.
212. Dorian Thompson-Robinson QB UCLA - he just seems like a kid that McCarthy likes to develop into a very good QB.
244. Jerrod Clark DT/NT Coastal Carolina - massive guy with quick feet, former TE so understands the OL blocking schemes, can take on double teams and still move them, team captain, huge wing span, once in the weight room his strength should engulf the OL middle, very underrated IMO. Believe Quinn will get him in the lineup as the backup to Hankins quickly.
