One of the darkest days in Cowboys history. During the fifth game of the 1999 season, on October 10, Irvin was tackled by Philadelphia Eagles defensive back Tim Hauck & driven head-first into the turf at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia.

He sustained a non-life-threatening cervical spine injury but was carted from the field. A day no fan will ever forget.

The booing still haunts me. I know it's not the entire city of Philly, but man, so e of them can be very rough.
I still say to this day. Had Randy Moss got drafted. Then it's possible that play never happens and Irvin plays 3 more seasons.

Thanks for sharing, but I don’t want to see that again.
I remember very well, truly sad day.
I remember every time we play in Philly.

No excuse for any idiot that boos an injury but a lot of the booing was aimed at Deion after he started doing his stupid rain dance around Irvin.

All the more reason to kick butt Sunday Night.
Stupid Egals were very lucky to win yesterday. That said, Arizona's been the only .500 team they've play thus far. Hope our D didn't get too banged up yesterday & recoops very fast. As usual when they play Dallas, this will be the Egals Superbowl again Sunday night lol.

I was in the building for that one. Just disgusting, and good thing it was the one time I sprung for good seats at that hideous stayjum because the 700 level people would have given me a beating. I was livid. Probably the most classless thing I’ve ever seen in pro sports.

There was nothing in that play that should have caused a concussion. I'm assuming he had a concussion not too long prior to that and it made it a lot easier to get another one.

Maybe, but it wasn't really that specific injury on that play that directly ended his career. That injury led to Irvin being intensely monitored and tested, which ended up with him being diagnosed with cervical spinal stenosis. He probably had that condition for years without it being diagnosed, but once it was discovered it was highly recommended he retire.

His head hit concrete which was under the AstroTurf. Players felt as if they were playing on concrete. Many injuries occurred on that slab including Bears WR Wendall Davis who tore his patella tendons in both knees on the same play. Jamal Lewis season ending knee injury, Duce Staley foot, the list goes on.

Remember that like it was yesterday. Our offense was on fire that season as well. It ended up being the beginning of the end.
