3 free agents with Matt Eberflus ties who would be perfect fits on the Cowboys
By Maitland Rutledge

The Dallas Cowboys now have their new head coach in place in Brian Schottenheimer and have already hired two new coordinators. One is Matt Eberflus as defensive coordinator. Eberflus was most recently the head coach of the Chicago Bears, but has ties to the Cowboys going back to the days of Jason Garrett and Rod Marinell when he served as the team's linebackers coach.

With Eberflus having recent ties in Indianapolis and Chicago, it is not farfetched to think the Cowboys will try to bring in players through free agency who Eberflus coached previously. Free agency does not kick off until March, but teams are already bracing for letting guys walk. If these players hit the open market, they would be good fits for the Cowboys.

Will Fries could be a value signing considering he missed most of 2024 with an injury. Developed very well for a 7th round pick.
His PFF grade was excellent before going on IR. Really excelled at run blocking
To me, the question for any interior signing, is value. Is Fries at a mid tier or upper contract better than Bass, Hoffman or Richards on an ELC deal?
Do we want to restart the OL spending especially with Tyler Smith due for a 20mil+ extension?

I tend to look at it more from an overlap point of view. I think any team can afford to pay 3 premium contracts to the OL at the most, and maybe another mid contract.

Having said that, I’ll look at this signing as how much it’ll overlap with Tyler Smith and Beebee’s (if he develops into what we think he’ll be) big deals. I think we can do that for a 2-3 year period, regardless of what contact length he signs. Guyton would barely be up for one by then, if he meets expectations, and Steele’s contract will be below mid.

Interesting POV. Dallas has done that in the past with Smith, Frederick and Martin.
From an offensive line standpoint, it is pretty a clean slate, outside of dead cap from Martin.

I just have to wonder how tight the front office will get with extensions to Parsons, Smith(this or next) and possibly Osa and then also bidding on an OL that could get pricey.

well i can't take credit for this but I read this player could be a Kendricks type value signing to help the transition to MEs defense...

Anthony Walker Jr. is an American football linebacker who played for the Indianapolis Colts from 2017–2020. He is currently a linebacker for the Miami Dolphins

Speed had really good season and it'll be interesting to see his market value.
FA LBs tackles:
Jamien Sherwood NYJ -158 tckls
Robert Spillane LV - 158 tckls
E.J. Speed IND - 142 tckls
Eric Kendricks DAL - 138 tckls
Kyzir White ARZ - 137 tckls

New DL Coach from the Jets (Whitecotton) should know about Sherwood who had a breakout season, but at 6'2, 216 Eberflus may pass.

EJ Speed (6'4 227) is from Ft. Worth and was drafted by Eberflus, another breakout guy. Speed is 29 so factor that in.

Kendricks is a familiar at the Star, and would be a cheap option.

Well we don't have to stop there though they can bring in one other linebacker and yes kendricks for some reason flew under the radar this year he had a very good year way above expectations there's a reason that San Francisco wanted him and for his age and injury history I wasn't expecting much and this guy played great it wasn't just the number of tackles 'cause we could go back to jalen Smith and support him with just tackles look at the tackles for loss the activity he had trying to create turnovers the leadership qualities I mean when he wore the green dot and he was in there you could tell the difference between the two games he missed I believe or maybe it was just one game but he ran that defense very well and he also put up solid numbers.

So I'm not against bringing him back but he is gonna be another year older and does he fit the new defense that's why I posted that name above that would be a defensive coordinator's ex player just like Mike Zimmer brought in kendricks sometimes they want that leader on defense to be someone who's ran their defense before...

Yes Walker Jr. fits the criteria, maybe even moreso due to the low price he'll probably go for. An Eberflus guy with his best years in Matt's scheme.
