Hurricane Irene, or poor baseball? Fan counts people in stands at Florida Marlins game, gets 347
By Daniel O'Leary

If a baseball game happens in South Florida, and no one is there to see it, does it still count in the standings?

Marlins fan Justin Cohen noticed a few empty seats at Sun Life Stadium -not exactly a rarity - on a sunny Wednesday afternoon for Game 1 of a doubleheader with the Cincinnati Reds.

He decided he would count the number of fans in attendance.

By hand.

He then posted his unofficial findings on Twitter (@790Justin): 347 die-hards in the building.

Might be less for tonight's Ravens-Skins game if the rain keeps up.

347. That must be a record attendance for the Marlins. :muttley:

That's what I was thinking too, lol. I bet they've had lower attendance numbers than that more than once. I'm surprised they are getting a new stadium next year.

You would think Florida would be a great baseball state, given the weather, but the Marlins have always been a dog since day one... even though they've won the World Series twice...

And Floridians don't support the Jags either. I'm guessing they will lose them sooner later. Wonder what exactly they are up to down there if not rooting for their home teams. S Beach might be a playa in that mix.

Less competition in the stands for foul balls.

Funny I bet watching a foul ball down the third base line and those rushing from the first base line to get to it first... :laugh2:

Baseball. :p:

This is what happens when a rain shower can cause a 3 hour delay in a sport. No one wants to show up and have to stick around for 6 hours to watch a game in the rain.

The 347 in attendance were all friends and family members of the organization.

I figured it was just a culmination of all the player's mistresses...

Just A-Rod's. Obviously they aren't even smart enough to show up to the correct ballpark.

Miami Is just a terrible sports town. However that stadium is terrible for baseball. will be interesting to see if the new stadium next year draws people.
