The Cowboys most underappreciated player could use a little more appreciation.
By Dan Rogers Jun 10, 2024

The Dallas Cowboys have a lot of business to do as three of their biggest stars are coming to the end of their contracts. Extending Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and eventually Micah Parsons are all important moves the front office needs to get done so the team can stay competitive for years to come. While it’s hard to find more valuable players than the big three, another guy on the team is almost as valuable and happens to have an expiring contract coming as well. That guy is DeMarcus Lawrence.

Lawrence has played 10 seasons in the league and even still, people aren’t sure what to make of him. For some fans, he’s one of the most underrated players in the game as he’s always getting his hands dirty and coming up with big plays. His contributions don’t go unnoticed by broadcasters as they have been singing his praise for years. It’s hard to make it through a game without someone talking about how valuable he is.

Whether you owned stock in Tank, Inc. early or late, it’s pretty clear that he’s a valuable asset. Lawrence will be an unrestricted free agent next year, and what’s next for him is unknown, but he hinted around last week that he has no interest in hanging things up and could play another five years.

The thinking for some might be that Lawrence would play out the remainder of his contract in Dallas and then the team would replace him with younger players. After all, they selected a run-stopping defensive end in the second round of April’s draft, the same round they got Lawrence in ten years ago. However, there might be a better option and that option would be keeping him around a little longer. Here are four reasons why this makes sense.

HE’S STILL REALLY GOOD
HE’S RESILIENT
HE’S A HIGH-CHARACTER GUY
HE’S AFFORDABLE

Maybe as a depth guy with a discounted new contract.

If he was gassed by the wildcard, his stamina/resilience won't improve into his 30's

Really it just comes down to if he can still play at a high level. At this stage in his career, I’d expect a drop off this next season

Read the writing on the wall.....
  • extending Tank is easy but they making play out the final year of his deal
  • Marshawn Kneeland ( some say he's Tank 2.0) was drafted in 2nd round for a reason
I hate to say it coz he's one of my favorite players but his days are numbered. I expect an exit after the season similar to Tyron Smith

I get sick of this narrative that "he's underappreciated". What, are we all up into feelings now?

Besides, its b.s. He hasn't been the focus of fans like the guys wanting record breaking contracts. Had he not made that "we're tired" excuse he probably flies under tha radar of blame for the team quitting the week leading up to the GB game.

He is another overrated/overpaid average player who is somebody in the NFL because he wears the Star.
Put him on any other team, and they wouldn't even know his name.

Yeah but when he is gone who is going to tell the rookies not to bother listening to the head coach because Jerry is the boss?

Anyone catch the problem yet, or do we still think the head coach not being the clear guy in charge isn’t a problem?

It’s easy (and lazy) for someone to write a story about keeping him around without providing a contract number.

I’ll go on record.

$5 million.

If he would accept a deal in that range? Sure.

If not, thanks, but no thanks.

I'd go double that. He's played really well last year for the most part.

I think DLaw is gone after this season. 2024 has the looks of a gut job, and he's too old to stick around for the rebuild that comes afterwards.

I wouldn't mind Tank on a 1 year 7-8 million a year deal after this season just to have the vet/locker room presence.

Good grief we sure do love our guys. Bro has been an overpaid cancer for so long now we don't even realize there is another way.
He's a team leader.

Don't know where you are getting "cancer" from. Dude had leverage and used it. That's how things work in business.

and yet he's the only decent run stopper+pass rusher on the whole defense,,, not sure what the Cowboys are doing but they're doing it wrong.

That’s honestly my expectation as well.

Based on the draft, it looks like the team plans to move on from both Lawrence and Zack Martin in an effort to get some much needed cap room.
