WASHINGTON – A group of 12 college presidents passed a plan for college football to have a four-team playoff starting with the 2014 season.
The BCS Presidential Oversight Committee emerged from a meeting at the Dupont Circle Hotel late Wednesday afternoon to announce they have adopted the playoff format that had been approved last week by the commissioners of the 11 BCS conferences.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A four-team playoff for college football has been formally approved by a presidential oversight committee, a dramatic change for the sport that will begin in 2014. The four teams will be chosen by a selection committee, the semifinals will be held at current bowl sites and the national championship game will be awarded to the highest bidder.

The 12-year deal is through the 2025 season.

So what's the 6th Bowl Game to be in the semi-finals rotation? Everyone, including me, is assuming the first 5 are the 4 BCS games plus the Cotton. Any guesses - educated or not - on the 6th?

I would guess the Capital One bowl, it has the first non-BCS selection from the Big 10 and SEC and is 2nd to the Cotton Bowl in payout.

I was thinking maybe the Outback Bowl, but then thought the Peach Bowl (whatever they call it these days) would make a lot of sense. That way no single state had 2 of the 6. (Not that Georgia is exactly all that far away from Florida).

At least we get something.

No doubt there will be mass debate over the #4 and #5 teams.

It's not perfect, but it's light year ahead of where we were. It's now going to be virtually mathematically impossible to go undefeated in a major conference and get left out (like Auburn was in 2004) and also I think we may finally see a mid-major like TCU or Boise State have a honest chance of making the playoffs if they have a stellar season.

Post Script: Yes I know TCU no longer is in a mid-major but I'm just using their history as an example of something which could help some future team in a similar situation. And AFAIC, Boise State is still in a mid-major even though technically a BCS Conference.

I'm not so sure.

I haven't heard what they were going to do with the other bowls.

Someone I talked to said that the bowl will be able to pick participants, no AQs at all.

Just a committee who picks the 4 playoff teams and the bowl people get to take whoever they want.

If that is the case, it's a complete joke.

With the extra cash that this will generate i fully expect to get a 16 team playoff in the future .. maybe even 24 or 26 teams. Just too much cash out there from TV for it not to happen.

I predict a majority dislike of this format within 5 years followed by 7 years of "we gave you what you wanted and we cannot change it until 2026" from the NCAA.

That may end up being the case but thing about the NCAA these things take time.

When they made the change to the BCS setup that was a major step moving forward from what college football was before where the #1 and #2 seldom played each other but the BCS made that happen of course there was still debate but much less than before the BCS.

Now with a 4 team playoff I think there will be even less debate I think for the most, people will agree on the top 4 teams in the nation they may put them in a different order but it is not hard to figure out who the top 4 teams are in the nation. As time goes I'm sure they will expand the playoff system.

One other thing the conferance championship game will also narrow that field in terms of the 4 top teams that will head into the playoffs

People get upset with the 65th pick by the basketball committee so I'm sure there will be no issues with a football committee picking just 4.

I'm not so sure anyone gets upset over the 65th team (actually these days I think it's the 69th) left out other than that university itself. Any "controversy" is just ESPN's pathetic attempt to get people riled up about things no one really cares about for the sake of generating ratings on days when no actual hoops is being played.

I can name a half dozen NCAA football teams I feel got royally hosed by not having the chance to play for a championship. I can't name a single "69th team" from basketball.

I love that we finally have at least a poor man's playoff. But everyone knows iy'll have to at least go to 8 teams. And no, this is not like arguing about the last team in for hoops.
It's just that some years, like 2009, there will be several undefeateds and/or 1 loss power teams...more than 4.

I'll take what we have for now though

No one gets upset about the 65th pick in college basketball. Since many of the spots are automatic births the only teams that are argued over are the at large picks. In reality they are arguing over a team that is probably ranked in the 20s to 30s and would be fighting for a 10 to 12 seeding that gets dropped. No one really cares about the school from the small conference located in the middle of nowhere that gets the automatic bid and earns a 16 seed. That is the team that really is the 65th(69th or whatever) pick.

IMO they should have a 6 team playoff with the #1 and #2 team getting a bye.

Also it sucks that we have to wait until 2014 for this to happen.

people are upset every year with the committee's picks on who makes it in, who didn't and what the seedings are. Now we're going to have a committee to pick 4 teams? Yeah, no problems with this.:laugh2: and who is this committee going to be? 3 guys from the SEC and one from Notre Dame? I'm sure there will be no politics involved with this. Why not just take the top 4 teams from the BCS poll? Oh yeah, because a Boise/Utah etc. might make it in. At least it will make for interesting threads on message boards.
