Dan Steinberg of the Washington post wrote an article on Wednesday about MLS team D.C. United hanging a sign using the slogan in their stadium. Steinberg suggested A&M and their fans might be upset about this. He was right! Steinberg was deluged with angry emails and comments from A&M fans and decided to share some of them

You must be a communist since you obviously don’t believe in property rights. Texas A&M University owns the trademark 12th Man/Home of the 12th Man. It is the property of the university. As it stands right now, Americans are still allowed to own personal property....You sir are the perfect example of the ignorance of today’s main stream media. If allowed to continue on its current path, your industry will be the downfall of the greatest nation the world has ever seen.

20,000 attendance doesnt make a 12th man. Its not even a thing you can throw around but it started at Texas A&M because of actual fan support for a team that plays a real game and not prancing around like a bunch of grass fairies playing a euro nancy sport....You wouldnt know real fan passion if it walked up and slapped you in your fat face. Few if any professional sports fanbases do.

Texas A&M’s bizarre obsession with protecting its “12th Man” trademark has been well documented in recent years, including earlier in this particular year.

“FYI #Broncos, the 12th Man belongs to Texas A&M,” the school’s vice president for marketing and communications wrote in January, when the Broncos had the nerve to deploy a “12th Man” flag before a playoff game. “We saw the flag today and will defend our trademark.”

That was hardly the first defense. AD Bill Byrne said in 2006 that he had gotten e-mails from supporters, complaining about Seattle’s “brazen use of the 12th Man theme at their home playoff games,” according to ESPN.com. The school eventually reached a licensing agreement with the Seahawks.

The school has also taken issue with other NFL teams’ use of the term in the past.

And next up? Well, it could be D.C. United. For real.

The only thing I see that is bizzare or ridiculous is the fan involvement. It is the company's business to protect its copywrite material, when fans are crying about it they just look stupid and petty.

I have no issue with them wanting to protect their copyright and for their fans being passionate about wanting to see it protected.
