A high school football player in Texas attacked the referee after being ejected for a late hit, then got escorted from the stadium by police

  • A shocking video shows the moment a Texas High School football star ran back on to the pitch and viciously attacked a referee after being ejected from a game.
  • Edinburg High senior Emmanuel Duron was escorted away by police after slamming the official to the ground, who was evaluated in an ambulance for concussion symptoms.
  • It is unclear whether Duron will face criminal charges for the attack.

I am sure the "Longest Yard" team at the closest minimum security prison could use a player like that.

I would press charges.

I was a basketball ref for a long time and there was many a time, I was threatened or confronted by an angry parent. An athlete never confronted, but surely acted like they wanted to.
My Dad asked a basketball ref to step outside one time. He got kicked out of baseball games pretty often. I might be getting a clue as to why I'm the way I am.

I've been escorted to my car by security a few times. Been booed by whole gyms. Parents sticking their fingers in my face, because "How dare I call a foul on their baby?" lol

Refs are told during training that you have no friends in the gyms. That their only allies are the officials. Half the time, they don't even know the refs before they show up for the game, so imagine aligning yourself with someone you just met 2.5 secs ago. lol

And even with all that, I miss it. I'd still be reffing if I had the time.

Damn girl. Newfound respect right here. Pretty awesome that you would still do it.

I do understand people getting frustrated with refs, when they know the ref is wrong. When you're the one getting called for a penalty you know you didn't commit, it seems so obvious to you, that it's very difficult to think the ref could have gotten it wrong unintentionally. Obviously that doesn't warrant threats or physical violence, but I've had my share of thinking the ref was out to get me, because "How could he possibly not see my foot hit the base before the smack of the ball hitting the first baseman's glove???"....or "How could I possibly be guilty of a 'carry', when my hand was clearly not palm up, and I hit the ball with the back of my thumb??"

According to the article, this kid was suspended last year for a similar incident. Maybe you can be forgiving for a one time, lost his mind incident, but if this is indeed a repeat offense then he needs to be in jail. It was an act of cowardice.

I tell people all the time. You have no idea what the ref is looking at, even if the play is right in front of them. Refs have areas they're supposed to observe and plays can change really fast that a ref might be slow to adjust. I always ask parents and coaches. Who has the better angle? You on the sideline or the ref who is standing right there. You in the stands or the ref right there? I've stood on the sideline by the scorer's table, I have no idea what a ref can see whose standing under the goal. But folks used to swear I missed a call. lol

If you're a player, ask your captain to ask the ref what they saw. Most are accommodating to the players, unless the players are outta pocket.

I cannot speak for any other ref, but I have never been out to get a player. I may give a coach the seatbelt so they can leave me alone and because they're talking too much and riling up their players. Coaches can be annoying. Coach your players and talk to me during dead periods. Don't talk to me during live play.

Agreed. He didn't learn anything from the consequences from the last incident.

I wonder if that's the incident to which I was referring earlier. It did look like the same guy, build wise, IIRC.

When I was young and playing baseball, I got called out sliding into home at the end of the championship game which cost us the game.

My dad who was one my team's coaches argued (he called it debating) with the umpire in the parking lot for a while after the game, long after everyone else, including myself, was over it.

Guess who was my football coach 2-3 months later? That's right .. that umpire :D
