Its just a question please be gentle! Not here to make any statement or showcase my (lack of) football knowledge!

I watched about half the game so far...and saw this huge mountain of a man....falling on people. One time chasing a RB up the field...he just dived on top of him...or back of his legs really.

If...this was him, and what i saw was real....I think he could be somewhat...er...dirty? I think it could lead to injuries like Tony's.

Or...could it be just what this defense needs. Big nasty causing complete destruction.

I read an article yesterday explaining that we are teaching him differently than what he did in college. So it’s like learning to walk all over again for him. They actually said you have been driving your whole life and now you go to Europe and the steering wheel is on the other side. You just have to get use to it. Thought it was a great analogy. He will improve as we go IMO.

Of course he will improve.

I just don’t know if we’ll ever get impact from his skill set. At least first round impact.

I don’t like things that improve the run game with a 1st round pick unless it’s an offensive lineman or an incredible RB talent.

I think Mazi has done his job and played well this preseason. Against Jacksonville he had a bad play where he allowed the guard to turn him but you can see in that game the LBs are free and running unblocked...... Because of Mazi. On one play I seen him getting triple teamed and not giving up ground.

I have watched Mazi bull rush a guard into the QB which forced an incompletion.

What Mazi job is will not show up on the stat sheet.

He hasn't been as bad as a ton of you say. We can't judge a player cause of a bad play or 2.

Hankins is the starter and Mazi will be the backup at 1 tech.

I don’t agree with that driver analogy. It’s not that big of an adjustment. It’s still driving.
Mazi needs completely deconstructed and started over on how to play. More like riding a bike your whole life and now having to drive a car.

If this is true, why would they draft a player in the first round who has to learn things all over again?

He's used to basically overwhelming college OL with his unusual strength/athleticism. That won't fly in the NFL without proper technique. He's learning and will be fine.

We finally drafted a DT in the 1st since Russell Maryland back in the SB Era. A 1 tech at that. He wasn't gonna be there with the team's 2nd, and he was high enough on their board to justify staying put and taking him. Anyone expecting Chris Jones production out the gate was gonna be disappointed. Guys more polished then him and taken higher at the position haven't either these past 2-3 yrs. With patience and realistic expectation of the position, Mazi will be just fine

It’s rare you draft a player from the NCAA that ran the same scheme a professional team does.

They saw a DT with athletic traits and physical traits that they could develop. It’s not often you find DTs with that ability at pick 26. Some that are a bit more polished go higher like Vea/Payne.

And unless McClay was BSing/overestimating Smiths talent they did think he could contribute year 1. So, let’s just see if it starts to click as the year goes by

I really used to like when teams would give their rookies at least the first year to learn the ropes and become contributors to the team by the second year. Some tenderfoots on the forum may look at me strange. Unfortunately, now...first, second or even third rounders are expected to not just start game one but play like All Pros..I would have loved for Mazi to be the second coming of Suh against the Giants. But looks like we will all need to be patient and let him progress game to game. At least Dallas has a few hosses in front of him during this process.

It seems to me when you boil it down, DT has to beat the person in front him by brut force, quickness, superior technique...or all the above.
.
So, in your opinion how many different schemes are there for the DT position?
.
I'm not trying to play the "got you" game with you.
I just really want to know what your opinion is.

...someone posted a thread with Baldingers breakdown of Mazi Vs Raiders. Informative..
