It's how some rookie contracts are structured now. The 5th year option is huge, he jumps over $14M next year.

This past year's 4th overall pick Denzel Ward will make $750k his 4th year. Before you go feeling sorry for them, they get an epic signing bonus.

I'm poor so I don't feel sorry for anybody but the question is how come Zeke's going to make 4 million in his fourth year and these guys are making only seven hundred thousand in the same draft slot ?

Zeke and Leonard Fournette (both drafted 4th overall) have much larger 4th year base salaries. Not sure why? Maybe @AdamJT13 can explain? Maybe teams have options whether to put more into the signing bonus or more into the base salaries.

Maybe a majority of this year's salary falls on the Raider's books due to them drafting him?

I was wondering the same thing

The Raiders paid a 2.85m Roster Bonus in March in leiu of base salary

ACooper signed a 4/22m deal with 14m signing bonus.... right in line with EE and Fournette

That makes the trade even better...... DAL only owes about 400k for this year.....less than Butler was owed

ACooper is making a total of 3.5m this year

700k base salary + 2.85 Roster Bonus that was paid by OAK in March

DAL got a great deal for the 4th overall pick in 2015

How is he a number 4 overall pick and only making $700,000 this year over the top doesn't tell me anything ?

All bonus money paid to players stays on the previous team's cap.

His contract was 4 years, 22.66M. That's almost 6M per average. He gets that exact amount by the end of 4 years regardless of which team he is on.

The Raiders have 7M of dead-money on the cap for Cooper in 2018.

The rookie contracts for the most part are predetermined based on draft position.

The Cowboys got a player on a 6M per year contract at the rate of 700K for 2018. Prorated to the 9 games remaining this season, the Cowboys will pay him 400K for 2018.

If the Cowboys had drafted a WR in the same draft slot in the 2018 draft, that player would have cost about 4.4M for the final 9 games of the season (based on average cost per game for his rookie contract). They get Cooper for 0.4M and save the 4M.

Considering that a WR is likely worth more in his 4th season than his rookie season, they actually get even more value.

Looking at it from another angle, they would have paid Watkins 9/16 of 18M which is 10.125M. From that perspective they saved 9.725M for 2018 and save over 4M for 2019.
