Actually throwing it forward would have been a great play, if he could have avoided an intentional grounding call.

Pitch was high and spacing was poor, from the angle I'm looking at but there is no excuse for giving up that many yards. I mean, that's just stupid.

It almost looks like he was thinking if he could somehow throw it forward (meaning backwards towards the line-of-scrimmage), it would be a forward pass, and the worse that would be penalized is an illegal forward pass or maybe intentional grounding?
