This thread is about finding a recipe for success now, this season. It is not about the coaches or players being replaced, which cannot and will not happen in season, so post that crap in other threads, please.
McCarthy reiterated recently the same thing he said last summer after letting Kellen Moore go. He believes the defense is the strength of the team with the most depth. He wants to play the game through the defense, run the ball more with a lead. He and many of us misjudged the team then, and I think it’s obvious he’s wrong now and needs to change immediately!
The Dallas defense is not the SF, the Jets, or the Browns. Our defense is built to play with a lead; they are not built to come from behind because once a team is in a position to play a balanced offense with a power run game and play-action, they lose discipline and are all over the place. We lose in the trenches, and when that happens, the secondary falls apart.
On the other side of the ball, our offense is not built to play from behind either. We have one excellent receiver still in his prime, a questionable situation and depth at RB, young developing TEs (none of whom are considered top tier), and an OL that is always dinged with poor depth. We have a QB who seems to play his best when there is a run game and good pass protection, but struggles and forces the ball when behind. Whether he won’t run and use his limited mobility or has had it coached out of him, I don’t know.
Mike McCarthy needs to get aggressive. He needs to come out passing early and often, mixing in just enough runs to keep the defense honest. While it goes against the popular thought, every time we win the toss, we should take the ball first and come out aggressively putting points on the board, even FGs. This offense, which players are still learning and its intricacies that are apparently still being taught, plays better with a lead and seems to gain confidence by scoring early. This defense absolutely is built for playing with a lead. If you can’t make a team 1-dimensional by shutting down the run game, then try to do it by getting an early lead.
This team is not going to win games or make the playoffs with a conservative approach. The roster just isn’t built for that.
