As the Micah Parsons contract negotiations drag on and on, I am reminded of what a great FO would be doing now. Of course they should have signed Parsons early in the spring because it would have freed up more cap space to sign other impactful players. That ship unfortunately has sailed in this off-season.

But there is still time on a very impactful player they should start negotiations NOW to extend a new contract. He is IMO the second best player on this roster. Extend him now and save future cap space: That player is TYLER SMITH.

Why sign Tyler Smith now? He has another year on his rookie deal. Here are the reasons:
  • By extending him now, they can lock up TS at 2025 prices, saving future money and cap space. What Smith is worth now will be way cheaper than he will demand the next year.
  • Smith just turned 24. Locking him up now ensures he’s here for the duration of his best years.
  • Smith and his agent (like most NFL players and agents) usually like early contract extensions because it protects and guarantees the player a good payday before a potential injury could end a career.
  • Finally - if the Cowboys wait again, it will not only cost more, but further hamstring their cap flexibility in the future.
Tyler Smith is the second most talented player on this team. Getting him extended now would save millions down the road. It makes perfect sense. Which is why it probably won’t happen here.

Great concept. But this FO can't understand stuff like this. They will pick up his 5th year option. Then wait to negotiate as usual.
I don't really care, as I can't do anything about it. So will not waste brain cells over it.
That’s ok, I will waste my own brain cells about it, lol. The Jones boys are either incapable or unwilling to apply whatever football brain assets they have toward smart roster building. They are brilliant at business. Not so much football.

I don’t have a problem with honest mistakes. It’s the stupid, head scratcher mistakes this FO continues to make that drive me crazy,

Why keep any good players.

With that mindset, might as well trade all our picks away too.

Rebuild plan for 2030. Then, when that gets here, trade them all away for 2035
Calm down. That's not at all what I'm wanting. Micah might be the outlier where trading a great player at the right time may make a lot of sense. Are we going to compete within the next 2 years for a ring with him? Simple question really. If the answer is likely no, then why invest mega money in him?

The gig is up for Jerry. After Martin, Dak, Cee Dee and now Parsons players/agents know to just wait until the last moment go get the best deal.

I can see this deal taking place possibly before the Micah deal or sometime during camp haze

I’ve heard that Tyler Smith and his reps are waiting for the Chiefs’ Trey Smith to set the top of the guard market.

Trey Smith is franchise tagged and there’s an upcoming deadline for reaching terms on an extension (July 14th maybe?).

Word is that he and the Chiefs are close on a deal, so that could get talks started between the Cowboys and Tyler Smith.

Thank goodness Lord knows you work so hard to keep me in line!!

In order for the FO to sign a player, that player has to want to sign. The player knows that by waiting, they'll likely get more money in the long run.
Or lose money bc of injury. The goal of every NFL player is to get that second contract. That's the one that gives you generational income. I think 85% would sign the contract early.

when you know you are going to get that much money, unless you are absolutely greedy, you will take it. For guys like Tyler, a second contract is the one that takes care of them for life. So I think if the boys were to make a decent offer he would take it now.
