A sneaky need where there has been little discussion about-Safety

Our starting safety play has really tailed off this season. Zimmer finally figured out, Wilson cannot cover and he is using him more inside the box. Wilson has had a terrible season and is a candidate for a June 1st release. Hooker is in the same boat, rarely around the football, which is bad for a free safety.

Many of our favorite safety prospects from a few years ago are set to hit the open market and the safety class looks to have a few interesting prospects. With so many needs this offseason, might be hard to draft a high prospect, but if the right one falls they have to consider making the pick.

I hear you.

But remember Wilson and hooker are under contract. A new coach could get max effort out of them like Quinn did.

I don't think it's a sneaky position of need. Actually, I'm ok with Dono n Bell at SS next season, although I do believe the draft has some very talented SSs. Imo, the Cowboys need a FS, problem is Hooker's extension, so do they eat the dead cap and spend on replacement? Hard to see these guys working the cap at a competent level.

Hooker's extension was a head scratcher, especially for that type of money. Thomas might be the in-house answer, but he just seriously injured his knee.

Starks is clearly a dude. If I’m taking a Safety early he better be able to do everything and it appears he can. I just watched some of him this weekend and there was a play where he was covering a slot fade where he was able to flip his hips, run with the WR and get his head around for a jump ball INT. Stupid.

The kid from UT is also a stud. He gives be Branch vibes as a hybrid CB / S that is physical as heck and can tackle. Doubt he last until the 2nd.

Up the middle we are weak. You can argue the defense could be elite if we get a defensive tackle, Mike linebacker, and free safety. I would not complain if the Cowboys took Watts from Notre Dame in the second round.

Dan Quinn must have been some kind fo Safety Whisperer because these guys fell off a cliff.

Wilson is best going forward but a huge liability going backwards. Useful but can get you beat.

Malik Hooker looks slow and hesitant out there.

I am super hopeful for Juanyeh Thomas, but he will miss some time.

I think several here overrate Marquese Bell.

If Tre'von Moehrig hits the open market and the new HC can convince Jerry that Stephen's fear of free agency is killing the team, I'd consider it.

If the draft board gets wiped out and Malaki Starks is available, I think he's a difference maker at Safety.

Best player available could come into play, especially in the middle of the 1st rd. Agree, you better be an all around safety if you are going in the 1st rd. Starks appears to be that type

Richie Grant was another safety we all liked, Atlanta has gone the veteran route at that position.

A playmaker at the safety position could have a huge impact of the entire defense, I’m open but still would rather address DT position

There are a couple safeties in round 3 that could be something.
Malachi Moore Alabama, Kamari Ramsey USC and Maxen Hook Toledo

This class stretches a bit, I would wait until round 3 for someone.
Hunter Wohler Wisconsin, Jaylen Reed Penn State, Donovan McMillon Pitt, Jaden Voisin S. Alabama, Tyrone Lewis Jr. Louisiana, Kitan Crawford Nevada, Tate Hallock W. Michigan, Jordan Vincent Utah State and Kamren Fabiculanan Washington.

We have not had a really good FS since Woody. TWENTY YEARS.

Once the great Landry safeties were gone, we have been very poor there with the exception of Woody.

I had a thread on Xavier Watts as a possible second round pick out of Notre Dame . Throw the FS position up for competition in camp . The Cowboys are not getting nearly enough out of the position .

Hopefully a fully healthy Bell can compete with Wilson at SS near the box next year
