JUNEAU, Alaska – Black bears in residential neighborhoods aren't exactly unheard of in Juneau. While many people stay inside when bears are about, one local woman says she had a different instinct when she saw her dog was in trouble.

It started out as a typical evening for 22-year-old Brooke Collins. She let her dogs out as usual but this time, she said there was a black bear outside who took hold of her dachshund *****.

She said she feared for her pet's life and, in an instant, ran over and punched the bear right in the face to make it let go

That's gangster!

I expect PETA to be protesting outside her home in the next few days.

That was just plain old animal abuse. :laugh2:

Ok. I'll tape a body outline on my porch and spread PETA fliers all around.

No doubt. That is exactly the kind of dumb thing PETA would do.

Speaking of animal abuse. A new law went into effect today outlawing rooster(wasn't sure if I could use the c word without it being filtered) fighting in Texas.

I did not know it was legal now.

As for C fighting I'm sure it continues in Montrose. :laugh2:

Black bears aren't all that big. They're basically like really big dogs. I have some family that visit the mountains here in VA regularly and they say it's possible to even pet them.

The black bears that come to my house during the summer are both at least 350lbs + and easily 3ft at the shoulder and 7ft standing. When they were cubs, yeah, pretty cute and small. Not anymore though. I didn't go outside this summer to chase them away, like I typically do. They are just to big now to do that with. I sat and let them tear my barrels aparts and feast on old pizza and stale sam adams bottles.

Black bears here in Alaska get enormously big. Lots and LOTS of food will do that for them.

They scavenge anything not nailed down. You should have seen our neighborhood roads a few times this summer. Every can on the street on trash day was tossed and pilfered.

Small. Cute.

They can still remove your face with 1 swipe.

Still not as annoying as the weiner dog she was trying to rescue.

I don't PETA will have a problem with what this woman did since she was defending her dog.

They aren't as big as grizzlies, but they are a hell of a lot more dangerous. Black bears are extremely aggressive and will openly attack humans without provocation unlike grizzlies.

You would be absolutes nuts to screws with one. Pet one? Hell no!

Agreed.

I don't want anyone reading that and letting their guard down around one. They are extremely dangerous.

Well, I definitely wouldn't attempt that. But then again, big hornets freak me out too.

Yeah I agree, you shouldn't take what I said and try to go out there and pet one.

Here is the newsletter I just received tonight from my sons elementary school, up the street.

A large black bear has been spotted on the east-side of town for the past month and a half.

Authorities say it has been feeding on garbage left near people’s homes. Fish & Game officials say he’s expanding his stomping grounds and becoming more bold.

There was a report of a woman being scratched in the leg by a black bear near Muldoon and Northern Lights earlier this week. Fish & Game says this bear has a particularly large stomach and brown muzzle.

If you spot it, please contact Anchorage Police.

They included a pic of him. DON'T MESS w/ BLACKIE !!

They'll never tear me down because I'll never be close enough to them for them to :)
