Amari Cooper Potential Cap Casualty?

We are on track to be roughly $20 million over next season's projected cap. Releasing Jaylon hits us with 6.8 million of dead money on the 2022 cap. We are going to be in a tight situation. Gallup will almost certainly be gone as there are a lot of WR needy teams that will overpay him to be their #2. We will need to make some splash moves in order to get under the cap. Here are the moves that could save us the most money:

Releasing Cooper saves us $16 million
Releasing Demarcus Lawrence saves us $8 million
Releasing Anthony Brown saves us $5 million
Releasing Blake Jarwin saves us $4 million

We will need to find the money somewhere and Cooper's cap hit is pretty high even given the fact that he is a great player for us. As much as I would like to see him be a Cowboy for years to come, I am afraid that the front office will think long and hard about releasing him given the cap implications. I wonder what moves are going to be made to get us under the 2022 figure. If history is an indicator, Dallas will certainly restructure a few contracts to clear space, but I assume some high profile releases will still be on the way.

Ok yeah that makes sense. I do think this team finally has the dudes to win big and should be in win-now mode so keeping the band together should be a high priority. Restructuring Amari's contract allows them to do just that. I do wonder if they consider dumping Dlaw after this season though. I personally think he is a great player for us, but there is an argument to be made that he is underperforming his contract and we are playing good defense without him. Sure seems like we are going to be in some sticky cap situations for the next few seasons, but Jerry and co always seems to wave a magic wand and get us under. Cooper is almost out of his guaranteed. Its in his best interest to restructure. Im guessing he will restructure after the season with about 30-35 million guaranteed being paid out over 2022-23 with a lower cap his for us. He may even be cheaper for us to keep than Gallup

This is from Over the Cap and the projected Low end of Cap over next 8 years. If we go up 11M next year another 15 the next i think Restructure is the best bet to move some money forward as Cap is going to explode 2023 - 2027.

That makes a lot of sense. I knew a cap increase on on the way, but I never knew it was going to balloon by $100 in the next 7 years. Restructuring contracts and pushing guarantees down the road for Coop and others will definitely be likely moves.

My understanding is that when we re-structure Dak, Martin, and Zeke we'll be 21m under the cap. If we then cut Jarwin and Zuerlein we are about 28m under the cap which should be enough to sign the players we need.

Honestly don't believe that. Before Amari came we were in big trouble, hence we gave up a first round pick. What so many forget Cooper typically gets the number one corner, things would be tougher on all the other receivers if he left.

I think Cooper is definitely on the endangered list given the $16M savings. It's almost a no brainer.
I agree that Gallup will not be signed given the likelihood someone will pay him.
DLaw is not going anywhere. He is still a productive player and that costs money. His contract is one of the worst I have ever seen. I don't see him leaving before 2023.
Jarwin has disappeared and is expendable from what I see now.
Brown is very replaceable, hopefully one of the young guys can step up.

Dallas will restructure Daks' contract. And more than likely the max amount allowed to be restructured.
A max restructure to Daks deal drops his cap hit to ~19.25mil, or a savings of 15.2mil. Right then and there they are in the black.

Cooper can be restructured too, which would give him a paycheck asap and job security. Say, they max restructure his deal and add 2 void years. His cap hit would go down from 22mil to ~6.8mil for a net savings of 15.2mil. Now the team is at ~17mil in the clear with two restructures and not even touching D-Laws contract.

It'll be very easy for the Cowboys to create space to re-sign guys they want. And all new deals can be vet min+prorated signing bonus year 1 so their cap hits can be very little the first year.

We will be able to carry money over from this season that was not used. How much money did we save with Collins 5 games absence also should figure in to the 2022 cap. The Cowboys have built in restructuring clauses in most contracts so don't worry. Enjoy the experience of team winning!

Essentially any team can sign anybody they really want to, now that may cause problems down the road, but teams can decide if they want to do that or not.
