Don't want to look at it.

These idiots need to figure out what to do and do it.

I drive a Honda Civic. One car for both me and my wife. 42-47 mpg highway, 26-28 mpg city. I live 3 miles from where I work (6 miles roundtrip). I work 4 days/week, 10 hours/day. That works out to 24 miles/week or 100 miles/month.

I live within my means in a small 2-bedroom apartment with minimal utilities.

I'm doing my part to help the environment. I don't feel any guilt at all when I see those awful pictures.

What's worse than these pictures is all the fat, lazy consumers and politicians pointing all the blame at Big Oil. The consumer and the politician ain't going to look in the mirror now, are they?

They will cap the well soon (hopefully) and the public will forget all about it and go back to watching their stupid TV programs and acting stupid again.

I only get around 20 MPG, thus I am responsible for the oil spill.

That's what I tell me friends: The oil spill is Theo's fault.

On a related note, I've heard that, if BP wanted, they could plug the leak by exploding a bomb in the drill hole. Is this true? Does anyone have any information on this?

Wow! So much here to tear apart and don't know where to start. So I won't.

I have to think if it were possible and they knew about it, they'd have done it.

No. The best way to deal with this is a relief well. And they will.

This is absolutely wrecking the coast.

How can you defend that?

My Uncle was in a rage over this very issue last weekend. He claimed that BP could close the well by exploding a bomb in it, but was refusing to do so because it was cheaper to simply let the oil leak out rather than re-drilling.

He's anti-corporation for the most part. I bear this in mind whenever he discusses politics.

That's completely false.

Well Jon. Let's put it this way. How many years have they been drilling in the Gulf of Mexico? How many spills have they had? If you have a car accident on the highway, you don't shut down the highway.

Plus, this wasn't the fault of the oil company, once again, this was the fault of a defective part that was bought by the owners of the platform from a supplier. BP had ZERO to do with this failure. As a matter of fact, this platform that was owned by Deepwater Horizons received a safety award recentl from the government.

That's how I can defend it. I'm sorry about the coast. I'm sorry about animals. I'm sorry about the mess. I'm also sorry that we have to drill for oil but we do. It's not like there are other options. We NEED the oil and we have to go get it. It's ours.

Theo is right. Here is what will happen most likely.

They will drill the relief well, then cap it. Once the furor dies down, they will reopen it and the flow of oil will continue.

But it is far less expensive to do this than to lose all that oil. Plus imagine the cost of the clean up if they allowed that.

BTW, they were able to stunt the amount of oil escaping from the original opening by inserting what is essentially a type of straw.

EDIT: One more thing they may try to do before drilling the relief well is to kill the well by pumping cement into the existing well. If they do that, they still could hit the deposit somewhere else and still be able to get to it.
