Owls are so cool...

However, one time when I was TDY in New Orleans, I went out of the Hotel to get some fast food and when I came back and parked in front of my room, there was an owl perching right in the lofts of the Hotel...staring right at me. Scared the crap out of me and I just sat in my car wondering what to do?

After a phone call to the front desk, I found out it was just a owl decoy to keep other predators like rodents and small animals from coming to the Hotel from across the road where there was a small stream.

I felt like a damn fool...

Owls are among the most efficient, graceful predators... they fly silently and are incredibly fierce and efficient...

I think the tootsie roll commercial (3 licks) and the representation of them being wise old librarians diminished their status. They are among the finest hunters in the animal kingdom...

I love owls. They are so beautiful and haunting at the same time. Have to admit though, I love them more when the cats are in the house. Especially my little Ruby, she is a dwarf, six years old and only ways 5 lbs. An owl at the top of a tree could easily mistake her for a squirrel.:

We were fishing at a stream on a golf course near Benbrook lake with bobbers. An enormous Owl swooped down and snatched the bobber out of the water and tried to fly off with it. Its wing span had to be near 8 feet. It was in the trees opposite from us and when it started to fly down towards us, it was kind of freaky. We didn't know what it was about to do until it snatched the bobber out of the water. :laugh2:

One day while walking to class in college, I saw an owl swoop down an scoop up a small squirrel and then fly away. It was pretty awesome.

I was doing to late night top water fishing with a buddy of mine when a big old Owl came swooping down and took my lure. Thankfully he dropped in mid air before he got hooked. I don't think that would have been a good outcome with an Owl hooked on a lure. At least not a good one for the owl

That happened to a Mallard Duck. We fishing on the Delaware and a couple of Mallards were following us around. One decided to swallow the lure my GF's brother was trolling and flew away making horrible noises. It damned near yanked the pole out of his hand and ended up with the string popping. Pretty terrible to think it probably died from swallowing that thing.

I was scared the game warden was going to cite us. We had fishing licenses, but not for ducks.

I caught a turtle once too, but I was really little and don't remember it beyond my parents and aunts and uncles telling the story.

Regarding owls, I agree with others on how they are just awesome predators. About a year ago we had a picnic in a park here in Tucson, and there was a huge owl in this tree that kept watching us. It was kind of unnerving at times, and entirely spiritual in a way.

I have had my share of turtles and snakes, especially when running a trout line. Always makes for an interesting night when you go out and check what is on the line.
