How did I miss this story? Oh yeah the NFL draft was happening.

*Tears-bye bye Amazon, there are alternatives, you know.

The agreement between the shopping gargantuan and Texas Comptroller Susan Combs was announced today, ending the state's two-year effort to collect $269 million for uncollected sales taxes from 2005 to 2009, the Austin Statesman says. Amazon has fought Texas, California and other cash-hungry states that want the online retailer to collect sales taxes that residents would otherwise pay at a physical store.

Well, I just got a tax notice from them saying I may be liable for taxes on my previous purchases since they came to TN.

that is stupid, you are buying from a physical store, and then they are shipping you your product, they should follow laws where their physical location is

I live in Chicago, and they have yet to charge tax here. They only charge tax if you buy from a store that is in the state, like a Sears or JcPennys. Amazon is awesome, so if they started charging tax on everything, I do not know what I would do. Every year, my accountant asks me if I bought anything online without paying tax, and my answer is always, NO!

I know a guy who says Amazon doesn't charge taxes in TN.

He buys things almost exclusively because he doesn't want to pay the 9.x% tax at the store.

That's the way it used to be before they moved their operation here. Ask him if he got his tax notice. I bet he did. It will have a list of what he bought over the last year and the amount he paid that he could be liable for.

Why get mad at Amazon. The state of Texas (politicians elected by Texans) made them an "offer they couldn't refuse." Any outrage should be directed at the elected officials and their insatiable thirst for money, most of which will be redistributed or wasted.

Amazon doesn't write the laws. They have to obey the laws just like everyone else.

ANY way that local, state, or federal "authorities" can, they will increase taxes upon you. This is tax and spend socialist America as we know it today. This is no surprise peoples. It will get worse. It always does. That is why the world it about to end.

Well played indeed Mayans. Well played.

That is really unfortunate for you guys. :D Sorry to hear that. I don't know what I would do w/o Amazon.

Absolutely love the place.

I've had to pay sales tax on Amazon purchases since I moved to Washington because they're based here.

It makes me a sad panda.

I "did" a lot of business with Amazon. Now I might as well buy locally.

Your words excite me. Why not support your local economy? Just saying, people complain about there not being jobs in their town, but if their town doesn't support it's own, how could there be?

I live in Dallas so getting some thing is not an issue. Saving tax on expensive photographic equiptment and electronics was. Now I'll just shop at Best Buy.

Prices of most things I buy are better on Amazon and would be even if they taxed it.

Hell, even at an equal price I'd likely buy from Amazon because it saves me time.

Just gonna throw it out there, ask the store you're purchasing from if they'll price match. Best Buy for example has a policy of price matching "local" competitors, but it doesn't hurt to ask and I've seen a lot of "yes we will match amazon" answers. You'd be surprised by how many times you'll hear yes because that building is there to sell things.

All Internet purchases should be taxed everywhere IMO.

Perhaps. But you factor in tax and shipping and having to wait. Then it becomes a push IMO.

Yeah. If the total price is close, I'm inclined to just run to a brick & mortar store. I'm not exactly the most patient person in the world when it comes to my electronics. :D
