Have you ever thought it would be cool to have an Android Tablet built-in to your car? That idea is one-step closer to reality thanks to Saab Automobile. Saab shared today that their newest vehicles will soon come with Android operating systems powering their 'IQon' "infotainment system". With an 8-inch touchscreen it will primarily be used for audio, video and GPS, but it will also be able to monitor your car's on-board computer and will be upgradeable, customizable and allow you to download apps.

Here's what Saab had to say in their press release,
Saab's 'open innovation' strategy offers the global developer community access to the full bandwidth of car communications – infotainment, telematics, systems monitoring and diagnostics. In this way, it opens up new dimensions in customer choice for the personalization of in-car services. Even applications specific to particular countries can be included.
This is pretty slick stuff. Let's hope this is a 'trend' that other car manufacturers follow.

Hell of a lot better idea than Ford had putting idiot Windows for their OS.

I have a Ford Edge with MyTouch Sync or whatever in it, it is SO laggy and unresponsive.

If you're going to put computers in a car as a UI, the FIRST thing you do is make sure there is enough horsepower in the system to make it smooth and responsive. I just don't understand it.

Probably no issue with the hardware used. It's probably just the fact that it's a Microsoft product. :muttley:

Oh really? Could you riddle me some better enterprise domain software w/o all of the 3rd party SSO tie ins for Unix and Linux systems to communicate w/ ADS?

Could you go into detail of a better enterprise email system available handling tls/ssl and encryption other than Exchange?

There isn't a better Office suite available for an enterprise envionrment other than Office.

I get the MS backlash and the hate but it's always interesting to see folks opinions of better products that could handle say....15-20 trusts and numerous heterogeneus OS envrionments in say a single forest domain.

Not bashing...just curious.

I completely aggree about the domain, but Exchange you are reaching a touchy subject.

Exchange works like this. Exchange can be okay, but the bigger the rollout, the worse it gets. Also, if you don't know exactly what you are doing when setting it up and managing it, Exchange is can be an absolute nightmare.

In my previous employment, we had Exchange and it was a cluster you know what. We had about 450 mailboxes. I kick the Windows admin in the nads and took over the Exchange servers from him. I built an entirely new Exchange cluster and migrated all the mailboxes over to it. (make sure to split the mailboxes up into more smaller stores) It ran much better after that, but still. Exchange is no damn darling of a mail server. They need to stop trying to add more services to it. Sometimes it just better to keep them separate and integrate single signon.

As for Office. We use a mix of LibreOffice (OpenOffice) and MS Office here at my current position. It works just fine. The only people who use MS Office are those that use specific financial plugins that require an actual Excel instance.

There is no doubt about Windows Domain services. Windows Server blows anything *nix makes out of the water. All my hardware is Unix or Linux. I have Windows domain controllers for my office networks, but they are visualized.

Remind me what this has to do with in car entertainment systems again? Pretty sure they are not related but maybe I am missing something.

Sorry. I just saw this and figured you were just bashing MS because it's the cool thing to do?

It just appeared like your post context was insinuating everything MS does is bad, hence my reply.

Just wondered whys/ifs/whats better is all. Do you have a vehicle running MS-Sync?

Their track record on mobile devices is miserable. They do not seem capable of developing a lightweight system with constrained resources. Not much different than their enterprise systems I guess.

Still wish I could patent HUD texting for cars. Handsfree voice recognition composing of texts and HUD projection of your texts on your windshield when they are received, along with text-to-speech reading aloud if desired.

Problem solved for texting and driving.

With an extensible system like android in place, it's a lot closer to reality than it ever was.
