Annoying advertisements on cell phone.

I'm not much of a phone user and consequently not much of a cell phone user. We have Verizon Wireless and when the phone sits idle for a little while these annoying as hell banners pop up at the bottom and cause the backlight to turn on. Any idea what this is and how to turn it off?

Browse & Download
Launch Daily Scoop
Select ‘Menu->Options->Verizon Msgs’
Choose ‘Off’ and ‘Save’.
Repeat the same procedure for ‘Menu->Options->Bonus Msgs’
