I have been looking for a new piano. I was thinking of a Yamaha baby grand but wife and I cant compromise on the size. She wants the smallest available which is 4'11 and I want a minimal 5'3 to 6ft. I play it so the bigger the better. She just wants to look at it and could care less about the sound. Women! So because of that, i am thinking of getting a digital piano. I love the Yamaha Clavinova 700 to 800 series but of course the one i want is over $14,000 so that is a no.

Does anyone have a recommenation. I would go digital if the sound is there. I love the sound of the keyboard in this video but I have no idea what it is. maybe someone here recognizes it or point me to something similar.

I suggest to bring her shopping, and when you try the small one, play it like you're in Mrs. Boyle's 5th grade music class. Then play the bigger one like Mozart.

The problem with that is she is tone deaf. She would not know the difference. I could play like Mozart and she would think it was Mrs Boyles 5th grade class. She would smile and say that is nice. Now if I could play Good Golly Miss Molly like Little Richard she would think she was in Heaven.

What's her beef? Is it just the appearance or is it the lack of room? Is she being practical or is she being difficult? Whatever happened to "a man's home is his castle"?

On the other hand, I think electric keyboards are awesome. You can do so much with them. Just the ability to plug them into your computer and use software to generate almost any sound from strings to horns is awesome, and a lot of fun. I don't play the piano, but I have played around with MIDI keyboards and computer software in the past. I imagine the technology is way better today.

Believe me the sound IS THERE with a digital and for a lot less money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I suggest a Roland DS88 if she wants weighted keys or the smaller ds 61 or ds 78 for synth keys. Same sound engine in both.

Just remember it has got no internal speakers so you'll need headphones or an AMP
The RD2000 is lovely but way above my price range.

Still a lot of Yamaha Motifs out there and now Yamaha has lower priced models with the Motif sound engine but called something different.

You can get that gorgeous piano sound with any of them but the one in the vid looks like a Yamaha Motif under the desk - right colour for it anyway.

NO NEED to pay 14K!!!!!! The Roland Ds88 78 and 61 are 1200 900 700 respectively.

Notice how at 1:30 she uses the slider to fade in the string pad.

Brian Culbertson doesn't even play a $14,000 EP. He uses Roland as well.

Main thing is you need to PLAY them because the window size is different on all of them and some are smaller and more cluttered.

It depends on your budget, my brother. I'm not a pianist but have owned/been in households with pianos before.

Yamaha makes some great digital upright pianos that sound gorgeous.

Did OP abandon the thread???
Cahill, no just busy with work. Sorry did not get back with you earlier. Still debating. The wife wants a nice piece of furniture but not too big.. I want a great sounding piano. Yamaha or balwin if I go acoustic, but bigger is better with sound. I dont like the smaller yamaha baby grand. But I do like the yamaha look and sound of their clavinova series. I just don't like the price. So thinking of just going to a keyboard. I love the sound of the one in the video. I will pay up to 6 or 7k for the right one but not happy so far with what I am seeing. The yamaha top keyboard is around 4k but then I have to buy amp and speakers. And that is not a piece of furniture wife will like. So as always, I will probably compromise and get the yamaha 4.11 baby grand with the crappy sound that looks good. I can get a used one for 5 to 6 grand. The things you do for love
