I've had discussions with Brain on this but he's just getting started as well.

Basically right now I’m taking video off my DVR, using my digicam as a pass through and capturing the video as AVI and the sound as Wave via my firewire port and capture software.

That isn’t the real problem. The problem lies in converting the AVI into MPEG-2 and digital sound. To get good results I have to spend many hours, almost seven in TMPEG to get good results.

Other than the large amount of time, is that my AMD 3000 doesn’t like working at 95% for seven hours and almost always crashes.

I’ve read about hardware encoders like the DAC 100 and Canopus ADVC110 but want to make sure that they are worth the money. If they produce near source like results without the immense time and CPU resources I’d be willing to spend the $250 on a hardware encoder.

So if anyone has experience doing this please let me know.
