With rumors flowing, TCU extends Patterson’s deal yet again

Name a job at a major BcS school that’s come open in the past two months, and you can bet
Gary Patterson‘s name has been
spit out by the rumor mill as a potential candidate.
The latest speculation swirling around the TCU head coach is that he could be a front-runner for the Michigan opening. Or, to be accurate as of tonight,
was a front-runner.
No doubt in response to the latest round of rumors, TCU announced Friday night that they have reached an agreement on a two-year contract extension for the coach. Patterson is now technically tied to the school through the 2018 season.
As a private institution, TCU does not release salary figures, so it’s unclear how big of a bump in pay — and you know there was one — Patterson received this time around. In December of 2009, after Patterson’s name was seriously linked to the Notre Dame job, he was rewarded with
a two-year contract extension as well.
“Gary Patterson is simply the best football coach in America,” athletic director
Chris Del Conte said. “He has done a remarkable job in energizing a campus and community around his program and TCU as a whole.
“To see a sea of purple in the stands at the Rose Bowl is a testament to what Gary and his staff have accomplished. We couldn’t be more proud to have him as our coach and leader. He is a perfect fit for TCU.”
In 10 seasons as TCU’s head coach, Patterson has led the Horned Frogs to at least 10 wins seven times, including six seasons of at least 11 wins. Patterson’s .778 winning percentage is second nationally among active coaches with a minimum of five years experience.
Additionally, TCU is 16-3 in its last 19 games against teams from leagues with automatic BCS bids. Included in that total, of course, is the school’s win over Wisconsin in this year’s Rose Bowl.
“I would like to thank Chancellor Boschini, our Board of Trustees and Chris Del Conte for the support they provide in allowing us to have a football program that makes TCU and Fort Worth proud,” Patterson said. “Our administration’s commitment to the goals we have in our program have enabled us to be successful and to keep pushing forward.”
