Just need a little bit of help here, I am looking to purchase a watch but I literally know absolutely nothing about them..

Question #1 - Leather or steel band?

I would guess it's all preference but my question is what are the purposes/style types of both? If that makes any sense..like is the leather more classic/traditional while the steel is more modern and professional or what?

Question #2 - I want something fairly nice but I also want to wear it just about every day..Will I look like a idiot wearing a real nice watch with casual clothing on?

If there is anything else you may feel is important that I should know please let me know

It all depends on the particular watch you have in mind but I like metal bands. They are more durable and also hold up better against rain/sweating.

right now I am looking at a watch called a
Breitling Skyracer and another one called Sunn U1..this guy I know collects watches and claims he's willing to give me a good deal on either..about 3100 for the breitling and he said (didn't specify) a bit under 2k for the Sunn U1

Rolex Datejust in stainless. Classic, timeless (pun intended), and versatile. Wear it with a suit or bluejeans & tshirt. Definitely an 'everyday' watch. In your price range, you may be able to get a new one... not sure though, cause I have been wearing mine for 23 years & I haven't priced them in a while. :)

Leather bands are considered dressier in high end watches. you dont want to wear it every day, though. Leather bands wear out faster, and can start to smell. If you want an everyday watch, I recommend you go with stainless steel.

No offense intended but my $25 Wal Mart watch keeps the same time as a $3100 watch. I just don't understand spending that much on a watch.

I also use my phone as a watch. I do however have a nice Citizen that lives in the safe.

1. Doesn't matter, steel or leather. I only wear leather but that's a personal preference. Leather is more formal.

2. Unless its a Rolex (which I would never buy), 99% of people will have no idea how nice or expensive the watch was.

My daily watch is a Longines.
