It appears there is no saving the ***ushima reactor that was in trouble of a possible meltdown. They are saying they believe it has melted through the bottom of its containment vessel and on to a concrete floor below. If this in fact happen, then saving the reactor itself is no longer a possibility.
While a Chernobyl type disaster isn't likely (ie, no large explosion blowing massive amounts of radiation into the sky) this isn't a good sign for the environment as radiation levels will increase substantially. They said the drywell has been flooded so that when it does start coming out, it will help limit how much radioactive gases get released into the atmosphere. The drywell is surrounded by a secondary steel-and-concrete structure although it is possible that it was damaged by an earlier hydrogen explosion. Hopefully that isn't the case.
To clarify, while there hasn't been *direct evidence* that it has melted through the containment vessel, it is what the current evidence is pointing towards. Radiation levels inside reactor two spiked to 1,000 millisieverts per hour. Which amounts to people can't spend more than 15 minutes in the area.
