ARLINGTON -- C.O. Brocato began his annual Bandit Day too long ago to remember. The Tennessee Titans director of national college scouting, who is based in Arlington, and the other NFL scouts have seen it all here at UT-Arlington.

They once had a "prospect" run a 6.57 in the 40-yard dash.

Brocato started Bandit Day to give players a second chance to work out in front of scouts or for area prospects whose schools didn't have a Pro Day. Most of the 70 prospects who showed up Wednesday are too short, a step slow or just not good enough for the NFL.

"The thing I remember about the first one, whatever year that was, was we had a guy show up who was 5-9 and weighed 250-something," Brocato said. "He ran a 5.3, and he said he was a running back. A running back?!"

But the scouts -- 10 of them this year -- keep coming back for more every year.

"You're looking for one," Green Bay Packers scout Alonzo Highsmith said. "Just one diamond in the rough out here."

Miami Dolphins running back Patrick Cobbs, who played at North Texas, is the biggest star to have attended Bandit Day. Cornerback Mike Hawkins, a Carrollton Turner product, spent parts of two seasons in the NFL after attending Bandit Day. Former Dallas Cowboys running back Tyson Thompson and former Houston Texans receiver Derick Armstrong were others who came through Bandit Day on their way to the NFL.

Last year, Oklahoma running back Lendy Holmes, Baylor quarterback Kirby Freeman and former Oklahoma State quarterback Bobby Reid were the big names.

Texas A&M receiver Howard Morrow might have been the most recognizable name at Bandit Day on Wednesday, but the "diamond in the rough" was Southwestern Oklahoma State receiver Johnathan Haggerty.

Haggerty, who is 6-2, 205 pounds, attended Dallas Day at Valley Ranch on Monday. He caught passes from former Coppell quarterback Daniel Raudabaugh, who played at Miami of Ohio, for Cowboys receivers coach Ray Sherman.

"I ran great routes; I caught every pass," Haggerty said. "It was a little wet at Valley Ranch, a little marshy, but I thought I did really well."

The Cowboys won't keep Haggerty a secret, though. The Dallas Lincoln product is sure to be highly sought as a college free agent if, as expected, he isn't drafted.

Haggerty, who ran a 4.55 on Wednesday, caught 54 passes for 748 yards and six touchdowns last season. He left as the school's all-time leading receiver with 173 receptions for 2,726 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Midwestern State receiver Andy Tanner and New Mexico defensive back Frankie Solomon drew some interest from scouts.
