Barry Cofield trade fell through after Saints' contract offer fell short
Posted by Michael David Smith on May 11, 2010 11:17 AM ET
We noted after the draft that the Giants almost traded defensive tackle Barry Cofield to the Saints, but that the trade fell through. Now a new report says that the Giants and Saints reached a deal, but the Saints backed off when Cofield told them what he'd want in a new contract.
Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger reports that the Saints and Giants agreed to send Cofield to New Orleans in exchange for the Saints' second-round pick (64th overall). But the talks fell apart because the Saints' contract offer to Cofield wasn't even close to what he wanted.
When word first came out that the Giants almost traded Cofield during the second round of the draft, it was assumed by many that they decided to trade Cofield after selecting East Carolina defensive tackle Linval Joseph with their own second-round pick. But Garafolo reports that the Giants weren't actively shopping Cofield, and that they agreed to the deal with the Saints before they took Joseph. It's not known whether they took Joseph because they thought they were about to trade Cofield, or just because Joseph was the top player on their board when the 46th overall pick came up.
Cofield said earlier this offseason that he wasn't thrilled with his status as a restricted free agent because the teams have all the leverage. But Cofield got some leverage when the Saints called and asked what kind of long-term deal he'd be looking for, and he decided to use that leverage to inform the team that if they weren't going to give him a deal to his liking, they shouldn't trade for him.

A 2nd for Cofield? That is shocking.
