Baseball loses Don Zimmer, 83

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Don Zimmer wasn't a fixture in baseball forever. It just seemed that way.

He played alongside Jackie Robinson on the only Brooklyn Dodgers team to win the World Series. He coached Derek Jeter on the New York Yankees' latest dynasty. And his own manager once was the illustrious Casey Stengel.

For 66 years, Zimmer was a most popular presence at ballparks all over, a huge chaw often filling his cheek. Everyone in the game seemed to know him, and love him.

A sad day for Baseball. If you are or were a Baseball Fan, hard to not like Don Zimmer. Baseball is a lessor thing for the loss of Don Zimmer IMO.

Someone once said his only paycheck in his entire life was from baseball. His only job ever.

In 82 or 83 one of the 1st stores I'd ever run across selling not only new authentic, but "game used" jerseys opened on I-75 and Walnut here in Dallas. My buddy and I discovered it by accident one day and stopped in. After about an hour, and a few C-notes lighter, we walked out with our treasures.

His most prized, was a game-worn white w/ red piping, Texas Rangers "Zimmer" jersey...complete w/ nicely faded tobacco stains. It was comical seeing "Tall Paul" wear it, because he was about 6'4" and barely 160 lbs. It hardly reached the waistband on his pants, yet hung on the rest of him like a pillowcase.
