Based on 2023 numbers, here's where to anticipate additions and subtractions after mini-camp

(These are the numbers using the depth charts on Our Lads, which make it easy to review roster history from month to month.)

If they stick with taking 88 bodies to Oxnard, there's room right now for 1 more addition to the field.

That said, there's almost certainly going to be 1 or 2 subtractions from the RB depth chart sooner than later. While it makes sense that they would have 1-2 more RBs on the roster since going away from the bell-cow approach to a committee approach, it doesn't make sense to have 3 more.

Similar to that, there's 1 more LB compared to last summer, but with Zimmer re-emphasizing that position, it seems reasonable they'll stick with having the additional body, not to mention, it's generally thought that they may keep an additional LB in light of the possible need on special teams.

So, the positions highlighted would appear to be more likely than the others to get another reinforcement, likely in the form of a free agent signing... but who knows, maybe there's a trade that makes sense.

Here's my take, fwiw...

WR: McCarthy talks a lot about a player needing to be able to do two things, right? Connecting the dots with what's been seen already in OTAs, it makes sense that they may accommodate that slot at WR by making one of the RBs pull double-duty... or, shall we say Deuce duty.

CB/NB: Compared to the other highlighted positions, this is the one where there's more certainty about who will start and otherwise who will make the final 53. If they sign someone here, my inclination would be that they're thinking to take 89 players to Oxnard (not just 88).

OT, DT1 and DE: It seems most likely that these three spots will get another competitor added to the mix, and it will just depend on salary cap considerations whether that addition will be a veteran with a good chance of making the team, a UFL guy who showed them something though he'd be practice squad material in all likelihood, or a camp body signed off the street.

My wish list? Sure, since you asked :) ... assuming we reduce the RBs to 6 in the barn, then adding that to the 1 roster slot that already is open, we have room in the shopping cart for 3 guys.

David Bakhtiari reunites with his old coach, and gives the 1st round pick some time to grow into the LT role...

Lawrence Guy reunites with his original coach (cup of coffee in GB), and gives the previous 1st round pick a proven, legit back-up to rotate with (not a fan of depending on a 7th rounder to do that, nor Carl Davis)... and...

Carl Lawson reunites with his original coach (Guenther), and mainly fills the pass rushing specialist void left by Dante' Fowler's exit.

Could still look at Stephon Gilmore and fill that CB/NB void, too, if there's room on the salary spreadsheet and if there's openness to taking 89 players to training camp.
