Bill Belichick expresses concerns about NFL ownership

Published December 31, 2024 09:44 AM

When it became clear that there wouldn’t be an NFL land rush for Bill Belichick’s services, Belichick changed the narrative.

He doesn’t want to work for an NFL owner anyway.

The attitude came through on Monday, during the latest episode of the Let’s Go! podcast. Asked a simple question — When should teams make coaching changes? — Belichick turned the answer into a mini-rant against NFL owners generally.

Nice hit piece by Flurio. When should teams make coaching changes? Is not a " simple question" nor was Belechek's answer a rant. He didn't call out anyone. He simply said it is a personal decision of each owner and he inferred that most coaches aren't given long enough time really to build anything. He mentioned Tom Landry as a guy who could never do what he did in the modern NFL. He is not wrong. Landry didn't break .500 until his 6th season. Most modern organizations would have canned him after his 3rd year.

What Belechek is saying is that there is no room in the NFL these days for coaches to come in and build anything they can call their own b/c most teams have too many people making personnel decisions. Bill probably wanted control of personnel and teams don't do that anymore. He likes college bc he can control what he puts on the field to a greater degree. Saban left the NFL for similar reasons. If he needed a QB, he didn't want to have to wait on a GM to agree and go get him one.

Belichick said. “And historically, you look back at great coaches like Tom Landry, who probably never would’ve had a chance to do what he did in today’s environment. . . .

and he's right
