The Cincinnati Bengals are no longer forced to use a high-round draft pick to select a wide receiver since they signed Antonio Bryant to a multi-year deal. The team will likely wait until the later rounds to address their need for receiver.
The Bengals will be searching for Chris Henry’s replacement - a big target receiver with speed who can stretch the field - in this month’s NFL draft. Toledo wide receiver Stephen Williams is being looked at as a possible replacement.
The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Williams is almost identical to Henry from a physical standpoint. He’s athletic, agile and shows great leaping and playmaking abilities. Williams doesn’t quite possess the same type of speed as Henry, but was clocked as low as 4.48 in the 40-yard dash at the combine. That’s plenty fast enough for a receiver his size to get separation on a defender.
Williams answered a lot of questions about his route running skills at his Pro Day. Teams wanted to see how well the receiver ran his routes and how quickly he got out of his breaks. I’m told he looked natural during drills.
Bengals wide receivers coach Mike Sheppard was said to be impressed with the receiver’s performance at the school’s workout. It is believed that certain members of the organization see a lot of similarities between Williams and Henry in terms of playing ability. The team will definitely be keeping an eye on the receiver during the draft.
I believe Williams is a work in progress and must continue to improve on his overall techniques, physicality when being pressed and blocking skills. He has the talent to play at a high level and could be developed working out of the slot position.
Williams was a productive player in college, catching 70 passes or more in each of his final three seasons. He hauled in 21 touchdowns and over 3,000 yards receiving for his career.
Several teams, including Pittsburgh, Arizona, Miami, Dallas, Detroit and Kansas City, are showing interest in the receiver. Williams is expected to come off the board in the sixth or seventh round.
