Today feels like deja vu from last year getting beat up by SF who, once again, put more talent on the field. Jerry said the same things after the game as he said last year. Feel free to add here. In no particular order
Bets we won:
1) Making CD Lamb the #1 WR
2) Drafting Tyler Smith to replace Tyron Smith
3) Replacing La'El with Steele (even though he ended up getting injured, he was an upgrade. Can't predict injury)
Bets we lost
1) Signing Gallup to a huge contract and assuming he was going to return to form
2) Drafting Jalen Tolbert and assuming he would be able to step into the slot. He was a healthy scratch most games finishing the year with 2 catches for 12 yards.
3) Not addressing the LB position. LVE had a surprise year but he still needs help. Anthony Barr is not a run stopper. Damone Clark may pan out but he wasn't the plan going into the season. Micah played DL most of the year. So, we really whiffed on the LB core. In comparison, The Niners found Fred Warner in round 3 a few years ago. Hard to compete against a team that's drafting him in round 3 while we find the Jalen Tolberts and Neville Galimores in that round.
4) Restructuring DLAW might be the dumbest thing we did all offseason. We are now stuck with him for 2023 sucking down 26M in cap space. He is not even close to that valuation on the field.
5) Giving away Amari Cooper for peanuts and not replacing him with an equivalent talent. Our 2021 WR had far more talent than this one. Thats a problem in the playoffs when the competition gets tougher and the games mean more. I'm not a Dak fan, but he didn't have a whole lot of playmakers on the field after Pollard went out. Zeke is done in Dallas. He had 36 yards on 12 touches and is way overpriced for a short yardage back. CD Lamb was the only guy who really stepped up.
The goal this offseason needs to be to counter SF. If we can't get by them, I don't care if we go undefeated in the regular season. I sincerely hope to not see Zeke, a big ticket Schultz, or a new contract for Diggs. All showed what they are made of yesterday and its not flattering.
