I think about three of those teams are leaving the conference, but point made.

That said, it's better than C-USA, and exposes UH to better competition for both football and basketball. It's not like the Big 12 or any other AQ were calling them.

I'm happy for Houston to get in what is (at least for now) an AQ conference.

Of course, what is odd is that almost of the shcools in that conference came from non-AQ leagues. The very same schools but in a different conference, and now they are all of a sudden AQers? Why weren't they before? It's dumb.

There should no be such thing as AQ and non-AQ.
The BCS sux beyond comprehension. But if they're going to have it, let the BCS standings decide who qualifies for a BCS bowl.

it blwos me away how a program like SMU (or plenty of other examples) can be "AQ" and then Boise St, Southern Miss, ECU, and others are not. Access to 10s of millions extra for no reason at all.

It's a calculated risk for sure...especially now that we have no coach. *side-eyeing Sumlin*

Houston basically has two years to show they deserve to be in the spotlight.

The basketball squad is about two years away from really making a run of some kind. Still got the dregs from Penders on the team.

If neither team can continue their upswing, then back to basement they go...and all this excitement was for naught. :(

I seen they had a pic like that for Boise State as well.

I'm pulling for them.

If they're an all-sports member, they are going to kick butt in the other sports. The Big East is terrible outside of the best basketball and marginal football.

UH will kill them in Baseball and track, for example.

They did one for all of the new members, but of course I only care about Houston. :p:

Yeah, they're an all-sports member. I don't really follow UH baseball, but I've heard they've been pretty solid for years. UH track goes back years, so I can see them shining there.

Big East may be a step down for some schools, but it's a step up for schools like UH who keeps getting left behind by the big brothers of the state.

Clearly it is a big step up for Houston. Big East is considered a BCS Conference

Most sports media and college football fans consider the term "BCS conference" to refer specifically to one of the six conferences whose champions receive an automatic berth in one of the five BCS bowl games. After the two top teams in the BCS rankings are matched up in the BCS National Championship Game, the other four bowls select other top teams. Each of the bowls has a historic link with one or more of the six BCS conferences with the exception of the Big East, and selects a team from each of these conferences if it is eligible for a BCS bowl and not playing in the national title game. The conferences included in this group, with their traditional bowl links, are:

Atlantic Coast Conference (Orange Bowl)
Big 12 Conference (Fiesta Bowl)
Big East Conference (not tied to any specific BCS bowl)
Big Ten Conference (Rose Bowl)
Pacific-12 Conference (Rose Bowl)
Southeastern Conference (Sugar Bowl)

Yeah, I know Big East is a BCS Conference. However, there is concern that when the BCS contracts are renewed in two years, the Big East may not retain its AQ status.

That's why it's so important for them to shore up their football competition.

They need to just go to 4 superconferences and do a playoff and be done with it.

Exactly.

They are on tin ice right now, but it's at least in their control somewhat.

I agree. At the end of the year you could have conference championship to determine the outright winner of each conference then take the 4 winners and have them fight it out for the NC

Who would the Big 12 merge with? The Pac 12 or the SEC or the Big East?

I was thinking Big 10

Have the ACC and the SEC merge

Pac10 and Mountain west merge

last one a bit harder to figure out but no doubt some realingment of teams would have to take place to include some of the independent teams like ND

There would either have to be 8 large conference (with camps making up the playoff) or these 4 mega conferences you speak of need at least 24 teams. Otherwise, we would have the same problem we have now of leaving out certain divsion 1 programs just because they somehow did not have historical ties (or gewt invited due to TV market) to certain conferences.

All D-1 schools have to somehow be included, or else reduce what is called D-1. I mean really, how on earth would SMU or Rutgers (or whoever) deserve to be an AQ program over a BYU or ECU--two programs who draw 45-50 k per game and have been in and out of the top 25 for 20 years now. It's way too random.

Now if only the Big East can get NY to care about college football again.
