Bobby Belt shares his prediction on George Pickens

We both agree that Pickens won’t get us two firsts. But I never refer to absolutes as long as teams like the Cleveland Browns exist. Otherwise you just reiterated what I posted so I think we’re on the same page.

We were the last to do it, so, it’s more likely we would do that deal than the Browns.

I think this contract situation is different than most because Pickens has only been here one year and only had all pro production 1 year. It makes sense to see if he can do it again before giving him a top deal. And it makes sense for Pickens to bet on himself and play on the tag if no one is offering a top deal. I don’t think anyone is offering that or we would be hearing some kind of rumors. Also his trade value being rumored to be around a 2nd which also points to what the league thinks of him.
Pickens’ production is dependent on factors other than simply his comparative skills as a wide receiver. In addition, any team, except the Cowboys, interested in making an offer to Pickens must consider the expense of their offer plus what assets they’ll have to give up to acquire him.

Pickens and his agent know the Cowboys, at this point, are not interested in signing him to a contract commensurate with what they believe is appropriate. The Cowboys are a losing team. They likely feel the Cowboys have more to prove to them than the other way around. If Pickens feels circumstances beyond his control have him trapped on a bad franchise he isn’t wrong.

He will play for 28 million reasons!
Of course he will play for 28M that 9x more than he made last year and sets him up for an even bigger pay day in 2027. A second franchise tag is going to be around 38M after JSN signing. So, he needs to be signed now or traded.

The cowboys have one opportunity to cash in and trade him. If we miss this window, ALL of the leverage shifts to Pickens.

No one seems to have the advantage. It appears that Jerry wants Pickens to play on the tag and Pickens seems to be okay with it. We shall see what transpires though.

Right now, neither side has an advantage. That changes in 2027 if Pickens plays on a tag this season. That would mean, assuming he has a similar season, Dallas has to sign him with floor being something like 40M per year , tag him again with a 37-38M cap hit, or let him walk for a compensatory pick. If we sign him now, we can average in the 28M he's making this year which is looking cheap relative to the market.

Personally , this team has a lot of holes, and WR isn't on one of them. For 60M per, Dak needs to be able to do more with something less than 2 pro bowl wrs. If Waddle is worth a first and 3rd, then Pickens has got to be at least in that range.

Some of y'all have no clue how to run a business. These contracts are investments.
Every President, CEO, Owner, GM in football or any other profession should and would try to get a high risk investment/talent to work/play for them, for as little an amount of $ as possible!
That's what every good GM in the world should be and is doing with every player in the world! But Jerry is an idiot for doing that? Really? IMHO, Jerry/Dallas is doing exactly what they should do with a player like GP. They absolutely should be trying to protect themselves from making a long term mistake on a player, that to this point, is still very much an unknown commodity and a high risk/high reward investment.

GP is known to be a diva, who on his first team was a malcontent and a locker room issue. He openly argued with his coaches and complained about the team. In 1 season in Dallas y'all think he proved that he isn't a head case and that he's a top 3 WR in the league that should be paid as such. Really? I don't think that he did. And TBH, I hope that I am wrong. He may very well be that good and may have changed his persona. But he still disappeared at times this season and still had issues on the field with penalties and attitude. So the truth is, no one knows what he will be for sure, just yet. How many times over the last few years, or decades, have WR's gotten new deals, many off of just 1 year of good production, and then faded away into history? It's happened multiple times and y'all know it. That's a big risk on investment.
Why on earth should they shell out mega millions on a long term deal for a player like that when they have the option not to do so?
And remember why Dallas has this option. Because they "paid" Pittsburgh for the rights to his contract. If he was so good and was such a great teammate, then why didn't Pittsburgh want to keep him? Why didn't they want to pay him a huge deal? Why were they willing to take so little in return, for such an amazing player? Why? Because that investment was a high risk and they didn't want to take that risk.

So why did Dallas do it? They did it out of speculation and hope. Speculation that he was that good and hope that he wouldn't be a locker room issue and just needed a new start. But should Dallas pay him huge $ just on speculation and hope? They were willing to take the risk, to give up draft capitol just to find out. And after only getting paid $3.65 million in 2025 and being that good and not a major issue, Dallas is upping their investment and hope to him. Showing proof of their increased level of trust in GP they are willing to give him a huge raise to $28 million in 2026, but still protecting themselves from a bigger, long term mistake. Because he is still a risk, while hoping he's not as big as one, as was perceived.

He should be thankful for their trust, the huge raise and the opportunity to continue to prove himself. Because it's in GPs best interest to prove to Dallas and the world, that he is worth the risk. If he is a top 3 WR in the NFL and if he has indeed turned over a new leaf and isn't the head case he was deemed to be in Pittsburg, than let him prove it beyond 1 short season. If he does, he will get all that he wants and more.

And if a team is willing to forgo the risk now and pay him top 3 WR $ and give up major draft capitol to do it, than Dallas is smart to let him go. But until a team says they are willing to do that, it's all on GP to sign the tag, play great and prove that he is worth the risk and more of an investment.

I agree with you except with your tag number for next year. JSN’s contract isn’t going to raise it to that much. It’s based off the last five years. It will more than likely be 20% more than this years $27.2 which would be about $33 mil.
